The Flames seem to have recently developed an eye for picking up prospects who tend to see major growth from year to year. Seems like a good plan to me.
In case you missed it
- Here’s the last update.
- Apparently the Flames are looking across the pond for some young-ish talent (Michael Lindqvist interests me, for what it’s worth).
- A recap of Stockton’s weekend.
- Andrew Mangiapane and Marek Hrivik dipped down for some AHL action during the bye week, and then came right back up.
Rasmus Andersson – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 34 | 4 | 19 | 23 | 14 | 11 | 8 | 26.07 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -1.28 |
Just an assist for Andersson this week.
Austin Carroll – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 17 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4.53 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.63 |
Just two games played for Carroll this week.
Dillon Dube – C/LW, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 30 | 21 | 24 | 45 | 20 | 28 | 14 | 34.35 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Dube finally saw action again after the World Juniors and a team-sanctioned vacation (mostly due to the flu). He came back to score two points per game, and is now 10 points away from topping his last year’s total. Here’s a cool video from Global Kelowna about him.
Zach Fischer – RW, Spokane Chiefs, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 38 | 20 | 14 | 34 | 23 | 23 | 18 | 21.28 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.52 |
An unusually quiet week for Fischer, who only had one goal but only played two games.
Spencer Foo – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 37 | 9 | 10 | 19 | 10 | 17 | 9 | 19.79 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 10 | 1.66 |
With everyone else gone, Foo is starting to become the offensive outlet for the Heat. He lived up to that role this week, potting three points, all 5v5, all primary.
Adam Fox – D, Harvard Crimson, ECAC
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 0 | 12 | 12 | 5 | 5 | 1 | 15.09 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0.58 |
There appears to be some odd fear that Fox won’t sign in Calgary, for some reason. Here’s our take:
We spoke with Adam Fox at development camp. These two answers are why I don't worry about him not signing in Calgary. pic.twitter.com/3H3Z7001fx

Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 47 | 37 | 49 | 86 | 46 | 64 | 33 | 43.51 |
Change from last week | 4 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 2 | -1.28 |
Gawdin’s slowdown over the past month has been pretty apparent. The guy has slipped four NHLe points (?) over the past month. As Swift Current has been stocking up, they’ve also begun to rely on him less. Not great indicators, but perhaps he can fight back and earn that top billing again.
Josh Healey – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 28 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1.38 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.1 |
Healey is back in rotation duty again, after a solid stretch of regular hockey. Three games played out of the last six possible.
D’Artagnan Joly – RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 37 | 15 | 25 | 40 | 21 | 33 | 19 | 22.16 |
Change from last week | 4 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 2 | 33 | 1 | 0.41 |
His stats don’t look that great, but Joly is quietly having a great season for Baie-Comeau. He’s crept up to second in team scoring with seven fewer games played than first or third place. Among 2017 draft eligibles, he ranks fifth in the whole QMJHL in points per game and second in primary points per game. He’s tied for 13th among all QMJHLers in primary points per game. He is also just eight points away from equaling his 2016-17 effort. Last year, he did that in 66 games. Don’t sleep on this kid.
Pavel Karnaukhov – LW/C, CSKA Moscow, KHL/Zvezda, VHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
KHL current | 11 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 11.03 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
VHL current | 32 | 12 | 18 | 30 | 18 | 24 | 14 | 29.21 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -1.95 |
Karnaukhov has found a permanent residence in the VHL, it appears. Slowing down in that league will do that to you. It’s the first time all season his NHLe has dropped under 30 in that league.
Morgan Klimchuk – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 38 | 11 | 13 | 24 | 14 | 18 | 11 | 24.34 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -2.8 |
Klimchuk has slowed down in recent weeks. No points this week.
Oliver Kylington – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 35 | 2 | 17 | 19 | 12 | 12 | 9 | 20.92 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.76 |
Just one assist this week from Kylington.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 27 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 5.28 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Lindstrom sat out both of Skelleftea’s games this week, reason unknown.
Ryan Lomberg – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 36 | 5 | 9 | 14 | 12 | 8 | 6 | 14.98 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2.15 |
Lomberg has been hot recently, picking up the slack for a lot of the recent offensive slowdown in Stockton.
Andrew Mangiapane – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 30 | 16 | 19 | 35 | 20 | 26 | 16 | 44.96 |
Change from last week | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1.11 |
Mangiapane went down and immediately scored twice for Stockton. He hasn’t made much of an NHL impact yet, but it’s pretty safe to say that he is too good for the AHL.
Mitchell Mattson – C/LW, Sioux Falls Stampede, USHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 33 | 8 | 10 | 18 | 15 | 16 | 13 | 12.52 |

No points for Mattson this week.

Matthew Phillips – C/RW, Victoria Royals, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 48 | 32 | 43 | 75 | 31 | 54 | 24 | 37.16 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 1.23 |
Phillips continues his impressive post-holiday play, scoring seven points this week. He also moved back into the lead for shorthanded WHL scoring. The next closest Royal is 19 points behind him. He’s also about to pass his rookie year totals, when he scored 76 points in 72 games. Also just 15 points away from passing last year’s total, which he could feasibly do in the next 10 games. He’s on pace for 112 points this year, which is incredibly good.

Really wish Poirier would be given better billing than the third line. You have to start wondering whether or not he’s destined for greater things than the AHL.
Brett Pollock – LW/C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Adam Ruzicka – C/LW, Sarnia Sting, OHL

Wow. Ruzicka has had a hard few weeks (months really: his struggles date back to December), but he exploded this week with eight points, all primary, seven of them coming at 5v5. That shatters his records from last year. This included a natural hat trick against Flint:
Hunter Shinkaruk – F, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Just a goal this week for Shinkaruk.
Hunter Smith – RW, Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL

A rare point-less week for Sveningsson, but he did get a 20 minute misconduct (they don’t joke in Sweden) for a check to the back.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, HPK, SM-Liiga
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3.98 |
A big week for Tuulola, who scored four points in three games. He’s struggled to find the net in Liiga play, but hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
Juuso Valimaki – D, Tri-City Americans, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Injured, upper body, week-to-week. In Calgary rehabbing.
Tyler Wotherspoon – D, Stockton Heat

One assist for Wotherspoon.
Jon Gillies – G, Stockton Heat

All over the place this week. Followed a shutout last week with another 32-save shutout, but then had a rough outing where he saw 34 shots on net (allowed five goals, 0.853 SV%) in just over two periods of hockey against Ontario. He then followed it up with a 32/36 performance the next day. It certainly doesn’t help that Tyler Parsons isn’t quite up to AHL muster yet, but just a rough week overall.
Despite this, he ranks seventh for goalies who have played 20 games or more in SV%. He also leads the league in shutouts.
Mason McDonald – G, Kansas City Mavericks
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 21 | 1189 | 0.892 | 581 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | 0.001 | 19 |
Allowed two goals on 19 shots, and only appeared in one of the three Maverick games this week. It’s a minor concern, but he’s currently lost the starting job to Chris Nell, a goalie two years older who was demoted by the Rangers to the Mavericks. He’s been a .885 goalie so far this year, but is currently rocking a .939 with the Mavericks. Let’s see if that holds.
Tyler Parsons – G, Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
ECHL Current | 19 | 1034 | 0.907 | 567 |

AHL Current | 2 | 77.68 | 0.844 | 45 |
Change from last week | 1 | 17.73 | 0.019 | 5 |
There’s no timetable for Parsons to get some start time in the AHL, which is fine because rushing him isn’t necessary (especially given some of the injuries he’s had to deal with this season). He saw a bit of action after Gillies was mercifully pulled. Only faced five shots.
Nick Schneider – G, Calgary Hitmen, WHL
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 42 | 2381 | 0.885 | 1267 |
Change from last week | 3 | 182 | 0 | 89 |
Schneider’s weeks are almost predictable. One amazing game (0.944 against Kamloops), one awful one (0.815, against Saskatoon), and one par-for-the-course one (0.885, against Prince Albert).
We need to continue to add to our pool of forward prospects. The only ones who look like they will undoubtably take the next step are Dube and Mangiapane. Lomberg may get there as a 4th liner energy guy but outside these guys we have a lot of projects.
Not quite as attractive as our defence with Andersson, Valamaki, Kyllington and Fox or our goaltending with Rittich, Gillies and Parsons.
Joly, Ruzicka, Gawdin, etc are projects, but they’re good projects. Defenders and Goalies are likely the hardest thing to find, considering as much we’re in a fairly good place.
I have a Calgary Flames blanket on my bed. I make my bed every day. It’s a good habit to make your bed every day.
My dog decided to take my blanket off my bed yesterday and use it for napping. I don’t know how he did it. He is very small, like Matthew Phillips small.
I told him not to do that.
He said, ruff, ruff ruff ruff.
I think he said “ don’t tell me what to do boring Flames fan, I kept it warm for you so you could watch the Flames game. I was going to put it back but then I fell asleep.”
I think my dog might be very smart. He also brings me my socks. I think I will buy him a pair of lucky socks too!
Your not funny
I actually thought it wasn’t bad! Enjoyed it way more than the game last night!
It’s all about the story. Give me a good story. The kid came up with a pretty good one this time. I especially like the twist ending where the dog falls asleep and doesn’t return the blanket. I must say that I did not see that coming–total surprise.
D’Artagnan Joly and Adam Ruzicka may not be without their flaws, but they both were fantastic value picks last year with tremendous upside and really little downside as both worse case will be AHLers. These are the type of mid to late round picks good drafting teams make all the time.
D’Artagnan Joly has 1.09 PPG in QMJHL action good for 14th in PPG for U20s in the league, 8th for U19s. Comparing that to Maxime Comtois likely the best 1999 in that Quebec class’s 1.14 PPG, Joly is honestly right there with the best in his age group in that league. Comtois was a Top.10 projected draft pick before his draft season.
What happened to Valimaki?
Injured his back carrying Team Finland
I actually don’t know. He had some problems before the tournament and it was speculated that he wasn’t 100% in the WJC.
Well played.
I bet it’s a hand/shooting thing. Didn’t really play PP at the WJ and he’s great at that.
Christian, I heard AOM is rehabbing a shoulder injury. That is why he has not been playing.
What’s up with the lack of offense lately, understandably without the top guys here in Calgary but figured guys like Shinkaruk, Klimchuk, Poirier, etc should be taking over. Considering the team gives up over 30 shots per game, it’s not a defensive system…Glad AOM is injured rather than in coach’s doghouse…
Thinking Shinkaruk and Poirier chances of NHL are slim to none at this point. Klimchuk seems to have levelled off (was hoping he would hit another level after last year) offensively, would like to see how he fairs in NHL (if given opportunity) – I don’t have as much confidence as some on here (hope I’m wrong). Not sure if it’s a system thing but our defense in Stockton don’t fair much in offense (yes Ras is doing well but Kylington was suppose to be the offensive star)…High hopes for Dube though, he will make make an impact…
