FlamesNation Prospect Update: Goalies put to the test

The Flames had enough professional goalie depth entering the year that both of their farm teams had Flames property starting and backing up. Now, thanks to injuries and a trade, both Stockton goalies are in the NHL for the time being, the AHL team has one goalie, and the Kansas City Mavericks have none. Hockey is interesting sometimes.

Dube surpassed his numbers from last year, beating 55 points with just two games to spare. That may not sound as impressive, but it’s the way he’s doing it that will get you excited. He’s already bested last year in primary points (42 vs 30), 5v5 points (29 vs 26), and 5v5 primary points (21 vs 18).

Joly came back from an injury and notched an assist in the one game he played. That wouldn’t be something to get too excited about, but that one assist means that he perfectly matched his 2016-17 totals, when he finished the year with 16 goals, 32 assists, and 48 points. The only difference is that he played 25 more games to reach that mark.

I wonder if the Flames try dangling Wotherspoon as trade bait. He’s not coming back (group six UFA) and he appears to have taken his game to the next level. The team is too deep to do anything with him, so it makes sense. Every team has a Wotherspoon-like player lying around, so it might be a sweetener for a team requiring young defensive depth at best.

After a rough week, Gillies rebounded. He saved a penalty shot, two of two shootout attempts, and 24 other shots (25/27, or 0.926 SV%) to secure a win against Grand Rapids. Now he’s back in the NHL.

Rough week for Parsons. First, he got lit up to the tune of five goals in the ECHL (on 31 shots, so 0.839 SV%) and in the AHL (on 27 shots, so 0.815). That wasn’t even the worst of it, as he was injured late in Stockton’s game anyways. It’s been an up and down season for him all year, but this is probably one of the low points.

Nick Schneider – G, Calgary Hitmen, WHL

    Some thoughts on the Flames prospects pool;
    There was a lot of buzz around the AHL team at the start of the year, but less so lately. I won’t discuss prospects in the AHL too much as they are fairly well talked about each week. However, I think some people may be forgetting how many prospects were graduated this year – Kulak, Jankowski, Hathaway, Rittich; with Lomberg and Mangiapane getting long looks.

    I for one am excited since it looks like a good number of prospects could graduate from Junior next season (I can’t remember the age rule in when you can play in AHL so forgive me if I’m wrong on that front). Valimaki and Dube are the first group of guys that almost seem to have stagnated points wise in the WHL. I think they have just reached their level and need to move on. Rasmus did the same in the OHL and he’s turned out pretty good so I wouldn’t be concerned at all that Dube has only just surpassed his points total. Personally can’t wait to see these guys at next level.

    Gawdin and Phillips fall into the next group as guys that just keep improving and have nothing left to prove again in the WHL. Another pair that I’m excited to track at next level.

    Fox falls into his own group, as I’m sure he would be ready to play AHL next year. But another year in college wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

    Tyler Parsons for sure has had a rough season, and for two seasons in a row he’s had injuries curtail the amount of games he played in. However; the guy is just too competitive to stop there. I reckon full graduation to AHL next season and some big improvements. Getting this kid game time will be key.

    Then a few guys that I’m excited to track next year, but probably should stay at their current level; Joly and Ruzicka. Both have improved and hopefully will again next season. On a side note would love to see Joly play on a better team. Guy scores an awful lot of primary points, what could he do a stronger team. I’m sure Ruzicka will get WJC games in again, could Joly? Long shot but ya never know.

    Then there is the group that I’m not that excited about. Mitchell Mattson, I have no optimism for, but still judging how he copes playing in NCAA will be interesting. The european guys are hard to judge and I never know how to predict where they will play next season. Lindstrom and Tuulola could play AHL, although I’m not sure of their contract status (I think Tuulola is with HPK next year). And then finally Sveningsson, again difficult to judge but maybe he gets a shot at WJC.

    Just my two cents.

      I forgot about Fischer. I know someone here is pretty high on him (Everton?) but I just see another Carroll (who someone else is also high on, is it you too Everton?). 3rd/4th liner at AHL level is all I see for both. At least they seem to have more talent than Hunter Smith though.

        Yep. I like Fischer. More than Carroll. I never thought Carroll would break into the Calgary lineup – just a long-shot hope of mine, like Guillaume Desbiens was, years ago! 😉

        Fischer, to me, has more upside, than Carroll did, same age. Just a hunch, more than anything.

          Carroll had a very okay 20 year old season, and it looks like Fischer won’t be able to match it. So unless one of these guys is Milan Lucic 2.0, you shouldn’t expect much.

      Nice take JMK. Hoping these prospects turn into the next batch that just graduated. I’m pretty sure team will move on from Poirier and Shinkaruk but Gawdin, Phillips and Dube are next in line. Klimchuk I’m not sold on yet but if he turned into a Backlund-lite (that some suggest on here), I’d be excited…It seems the team has finally stacked the cupboards (and continues to do so), ready to replace constantly those that graduate and those that get released. Good times compared to the days when we had 1 decent prospect we pinned all our hopes and dreams on…?

        I agree with you on the current AHL forwards. Shinkaruk unfortunately seems to be a bust. Poirier, I would give another year just down to the troubles he has had. Klimchuk in my mind was never going to score much and I always saw him becoming a 3rd/4th line LW who could specialize on PK, but when Lomberg got called up instead it made me pessimistic.

          I’m not sure if it’s still on the Flames website, but they used to have an historic list of our draft picks by year and holy Jesus were there some barren stretches, like a decade of drafting incompetence under the Sutters (a.k.a. The Greg Nemisz/Tim Erixon years).

          It will be interesting who they walk away from. I was surprised when Treliving cut ties with Agostino, Arnold and others so early, so Shinkaruk and Poirer might be looking at the same.

          Currently the team has 46 contracts and will be not resigning Stajan, Prout, Jagr, Bartkowski, Gadzic, Glass. That’s down to 40. RFA’s also on the edge are Carroll, H Smith and Pribyl, to say nothing of Wotherspoon.

          As for guys coming in, Gawdin is already counted, and you have to add Phillips, Dube and Valimaki (theirs are sliding now) . So even before they have to make any decisions on those 2013 first round guys – they have 10 spaces.

        This is the reason I have never been a fan of the Hamonic deal: it guts our drafting going forward for a good player but not great player (better last month, he does seem to finally be settling in and playing how we hoped he would). I often get trashed for trashing that trade but I still think it was mistake in the long term when we have so much depth of prospects on D

    I think it’s hilarious that Jagr is listed here as a “prospect”.
    Wonder when he’ll be any good. Oh, that’s right: the answer is 1996..!
    But this is a great place to keep tabs on him, so keep it up!

    Does anyone know what the deal with Foo is? I thought that shooting was supposed to be one of his strengths. It sounds like he’s been putting lots of rubber on the net this season but with poor results (other than one short hot streak).

      Its a good sign that he is generating shots! Goal scoring can fluctuate a lot due to shooting percentage, so as long as he continues creating shots the way he is, I wouldn’t worry too much.

      Puckhead, I think he is still adjusting to the next level. I saw the same thing with Jankowski the previous year. He came into the ice on a PTO at the end of 15 and looked overmatched. The start of the following year he started getting comfortable. It took about 20 games or so for him to find his touch.

      A few positives about Foo. He may be the only Heat player not allergic to the front of the net. He shoots A LOT but at least he is shooting and not over-passing the puck. He is listed as 6′ and 190lbs. but he is no where near that (IMHO). He needs to bulk up a little. Lastly, Huska, in fine head coach fashion (sarcasm), has been constantly changing lines. Like every game. I think Foo has played with every center, winger, and line possible, including getting a popcorn dinner once. It is a little hard to grow chemistry when you are not with the same players game in and game out.

      I think he finishes the season here, has a good camp next year, gets sent down to Stockton to start the season, and is the first injury call up (Just like Jankowski).
