One of the most notorious things about the Flames’ 2018 NHL Entry Draft is that they won’t be picking until the fourth round. But hey, barring any trades, at least they won’t be the only ones sitting on their hands as the first round gets underway; six other teams will also be without first rounders.
Unfortunately, of all the picks to be traded away, the Flames gave up the highest one, surrendering 12th overall to the Islanders for Travis Hamonic. The next highest pick that ended up traded away was 14th overall, which the Blues ended up dealing to the Flyers as part of a package for Brayden Schenn; however, they got a first round pick back – specifically, 29th overall – by trading Paul Stastny to the Jets.
If there are no additional moves, the Penguins, Bruins, Predators, Lightning, Jets, and Golden Knights will join the Flames in not having much to do Friday night. These teams traded away picks 22nd overall and lower, as they all finished either with great regular seasons, or went deep into the postseason. They’ll all be picking late in the second round, except for the Predators, who won’t be choosing until the 89th pick comes up, 16 picks before the Flames finally get to join in on the fun.
So, we know the Flames forfeited their first round pick roughly this time one year ago for Hamonic’s services. What about the other teams who aren’t expected to draft in the first round? What did they gain in exchange for their pick?
At the trade deadline, the Penguins were involved in a three-team trade that ultimately saw them give up their first round pick to Ottawa, and acquire Derrick Brassard as the key piece in the return. The Bruins, meanwhile, gave up their first round pick – as well as a handful of other assets, including a salary dump in Matt Belesky and a promising young-ish player in Ryan Spooner – for Rick Nash.
The Predators surrendered their first round pick for Ryan Hartman, while the Lightning included theirs in part of a package to ultimately get Ryan McDonagh and JT Miller. We went over the Jets giving up their first rounder for Paul Stastny, while Vegas surrendered theirs, along with a couple of other picks, for Tomas Tatar.
All in all, of the seven teams who aren’t expected to pick in the first round, three made it to the conference finals, three were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, and then there are the Flames, who just never made the playoffs to start with.
Happy first round watching!

To digress from the intense trade talk and some very “sky is falling” comments, which may or may not be warranted, are they unveiling the new third jersey when we finally pick tomorrow? If so, will it be the retro? It has to be, doesn’t it? 30 year anniversary of the Cup.
If Trelivings last interview on TWitter tonight’s doesn’t make you realize he’s an overblown i**ot.
Tre” yea sure we’d like to get a second round pick but what is the cost of it and does it make sense” really? You traded two second round picks last year! Give me a break
Two seconds and you know also that Top. 10 talent in Noah Dobson that NYI got. For a defenseman that scored ONE GOAL LAST YEAR in Hamonic!!! Pure Lunacy.
Okay boys and girls – see you back here at 9 am. Let’s see what tomorrow brings…
Anybody think the NHL should rip a page out of MLB’s book and forbid the trade of draft picks? Maybe the NHL could forbid the clubs from dealing their 1st and 2nd round picks but permit picks from the other remaining rounds to be moved as needed. By barring teams from trading their first two picks, the league would be trying to save the clubs from the ravages and excesses out of control GMs.
I liked how Burke was sitting on the panel with a smug look on his face……..full well knowing that the “were all in on Hamonic” trade was his idea……
WW
I said all along Treliving was Burke’s puppet. Hence why I referred to him as Treburke all the time. Was I right or was I right? I said that trade had Burke written all over it.
How can you prove that? Because another poster said it? Does that somehow validate your thinking?
I wonder if the oilers would trade us Hamonic for Bouchard?
A physical top 4 D for a kid with less than 50% chance of making the show?
No thanks…
WW

LOVE IT
Poor Bouchard. Possibly the worst day of his life.
They were thrilled when Puljujujarvi fell……and when Yamamoto fell……
There is s reason they fell….
WW
Pulju and Yamamoto are 18 and 19 years old genius. Only WW would call kids a year in to there careers busts LOL
Damn, if Jesse and Yam are busts already, id love to hear your assessment of Bennett and Foohead. Wouldnt trade one of Jesse or Yam for either of those two plugs
Hammonic top 4?
Hammonic physical?
More like Hammonic the friendly ghost 😀
Hamonic had one goal last year. Top. 4 defenseman need more offensive output than ONE FREAKING GOAL.
Trade a top 4 D for a prospect….what a bad idea
Travis Hamonic a top 4 D in what league?
He scored once last year. He scored 3 goals the year before that. Oh you say well he must be a solid defender then…. How is -30 for you…..
Evan Bouchard is the real deal. Read Mckenzie, Dreger, Friedman, Button. They all say the same. And the other “prospect” drafted right behind Bouchard … the guy the flames should have drafted is also a stud.
You’re a dum dum
The truth hurts eh flamers? Bouchard to Mcd COMIN AT YOU
Haha Puck, are you becoming WW?!
I guess the Oilers trolls are going to be cocky all summer again until the season starts and Oilers suck again then they will disappear until next summer
You are not the first one to call me that
The Flames have 3 D in their system that have yet to play in the NHL (Vali, Fox, Kylington) that are better than Bouchard…..
WW
Ohhhhh Kylington, the guy that was drafted four years ago and still hasn’t cracked the line up? Yeah hes a real gem
Eskimos look good tonight……
WW
Let’s see, Ethan Bear and now you’ve got a prospect who although looks good, has yet to play an NHL game. Probably won’t until 2019-20.
Yes we are plenty jealous of your prospect pool!
Trolling about defense when we’re going to be set at the position for the next 10 years is kinda dum
“Eskimos look good tonight……”
Yeah its poopy out there.
Just so jealous
Scoring doesnt make a dman a top 4 guy. Wow. That’s just bonus. I’d rather have him keep the puck out of net then be a DEFENSIVE liability. Lots of points does not make a dman a great or even a good dman. Look st where Merkley slid too. Also, is Hamilton rhe best Flames dman? Not a chance in my opinion, but because he scored the most points so many of you donkeys think so. Remove heads from ass and learn the game and get of chell18!
There is a reason people call you that
Bahahaha WW you are the commenter on all the nations. But face it. Calgary has sweet eff all on Edmonton in every way. Oilers have the way more Stanley’s, the current best player in the world (again) best arena in the league, you have Mini mouse Gaudreau and a trash dump for an arena with no new one in site. Flames are more likely to leave Calgary than get a new arena, though i truly hope that doesn’t happen. Then you resort to ‘Esks look good tonight’ which is also funny cause they’ve also won a cup more recently and have twice as many as the stamps! Your pathetic attempts to trash Edmonton are truly great. Kept it up!
Ivan…go hop into your rusting diesel half ton with a lift kit…throw on your dirty oilers hat…and drive off a cliff….you Thelma or Louise
I didn’t even read all your post because you will be silent as soon as another crappy season starts for your pathetic oilers. Atleast we have a core to build around…you have mclavickle
McD, Drai, Nuge, Yamm, Jesse Pul, Bouchard, Nurse, Bear. Our young goalie Skinner is also top goalie prospect out there. Sounds like a pretty young solid core to build around to me.
Johnny, Monny, Han, Tkachuk and that’s about it? Pfffff
Wow! Sure stinks in here tonight…
Oh I see 🤔 seal thumpers lost to the mighty ticats.
Tough crowd tonight. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I think the flames get a draft pick around supper time. All is well.
Haha how’s Russel working out for you
Oilers fans acting like they walked out of the draft like bandits. Trashing our Dcore and pipeline most of the NHL would kill for, meanwhile we get a front row seat of Bouchard getting rushed into the show, while the rest of your laughable D “core” perpetually crumble. Poor Bouchard…. lot of weight on this kids shoulders already.
