Dillon Dube and Juuso Valimaki have new jersey numbers

As we wait official roster updates from the Calgary Flames, some practice news from our pal Pat Steinberg: the rookies have new jersey numbers.

Dillon Dube swapped his training camp #59 for #29, while Juuso Valimaki has traded #42 for #8.

#29 was most worn recently by Deryk Engelland and most famously by longtime Flames forward Joel Otto. #8 was most recently worn by Niklas Grossmann and most famously by Doug Risebrough.

Dube and Valimaki are slated to make their NHL debuts Wednesday night in Vancouver.

  • I understand that most forwards and defencemen want the lowest available number other than 1 or 11 and it’s an unwritten rule now for goalies to wear a number from the 30s, 40s, or high 20s. in Calgary Vernon’s 30 and MacDonald’s 9 are officially retired. 2 and 25 are the “Forever A Flame” numbers of MacInnis and Nieuwendyk which means they are not officially retired but a Flames player who wants to wear either would probably be talked out of it by management. Coming up soon: controversy over whether to “Forever A Flame” Iginla’s 12 like 2 and 25 or to officially retire it.

    • Heeeeeere's Johnny!

There is no question about #12 in my mind. It gets retired. That guy carried the team (aided by Kipper) for so many years. On top of that he was so good in the public. Kids could look up to him. He played honestly and hard.
