Quips and Quotes: Flames beat Jets 4-1

The Calgary Flames beat the Winnipeg Jets by a 4-1 score on Thursday night. Here are selected reactions from players and coaches following the game.

The Flames weren’t great (but were good enough)

The last time the Flames hit the ice, they lost 3-1 to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday afternoon. Speaking to the media following the game, head coach Bill Peters jokingly asked how many days the team had off – four – and chuckled that it looked like it.

“Tough game to play, right?” said Peters. “You take X amount of days off and then you fly in on game day. And then your goaltender has got to be real good, and ours was. Gave us a chance to build a game, get our feet underneath us, and made some big saves in the third obviously also. Big part of the win.”

Flames leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau had a hat trick in the win, and credited netminder David Rittich with keeping the game close early on.

“I think were a little bit slow footed in the first,” said Gaudreau. “Ritter played really well back there for us. In the second got our feet moving, got a couple goals there. Big shorthanded goal there in the third. Just a big team win.”

Rittich improved his record to 12-4-2, with a 2.22 goals against average and .926 save percentage. Of regular goalies, only Pekka Rinne has a better goals against average and only Casey de Smith and Jaroslav Halak have better save percentages.

Special teams come up big

The Flames killed off two penalties against the scary-good Jets power play. Not only that, they scored a short-handed goal that gave them some breathing room – their 10th of the season, second only to Arizona’s 11.

Peters had a couple explanations for the success of the team’s penalty killers at generating scoring chances.

“Anticipation, some good anticipation,” said Peters. “We have some skilled guys on the penalty kill, obviously. Janko’s got a bunch of those. Real good decision to keep it and shoot it here today. Looked like he locked him up probably thinking pass. But did a good job, had some deception there. And aggressive. Aggressive mindset. We want to kill the penalty up ice as much as we can. If not there, then the stand at the blueline.”

Jankowski’s three short-handed goals are tied for second in the NHL.

Gaudreau’s arm is fine

Gaudreau was slashed on the arm by Dustin Byfuglien just before scoring his third goal. He left the game and didn’t return, though there was only 2:06 left in regulation and there wasn’t much of a point of keeping him in the game.

Asked how his arm was, Gaudreau said it was fine.

Just saw he replay of buffs slash. He turned his stick to slash with the skinny part (perpendicular to the blade) of the shaft. That is an intent to injure. He should get a call from the league and get suspended.

Rittich totally stole the game. It’s been a long time waiting to have a goalie steal some wins…..it’s soooo awesome to see his constant improvement. We deserve BSD after all the underperforming goalies we have had since Kipper.

    Notice something?
Since GG left Johnny has his first hat trick since pre GG. I think this is his 4th multi goal game. (Only 1 last year)
I’m so glad GG is gone?

Great win, now lets go out and get the W against Vancouver and not take them granted. They are starting to play some good hockey and their kids are the real deal.

Over the holidays I sat down and broke the team down. The question was who did we need to trade for to make this a hell of a team. After the Winnipeg win, I think I wasted a lot of time. If the boys come out and play most games like they did last night, they showed me they want to win. Even J N was in the game and I think the boy had a moment to think over the holidays or over the last ten days and he decided I am going to come out and play hard and he did that against the Jets. Rittich played a great game. I am super excited for the boys. Go Flames!

Either Peters was not watching the same game I saw or he was being tough with his compliments.
The boyscame out flying on the fore check. They clogged up the middle with pressure, pressure and more pressure. They shut down the Jets like Tampa shut us down. We got 4 goals and every one of them were great goals. I have not seen a two way game from Johnny like that in… forever. Brilliant game and he and Rittich had the same mentality …. you are not going to beat us! That Jankowski goal was absolute magic.

Please never mention this guy in a trade again. He was a “ beauty “ all game long.

Great win after two tough losses and just a loss whereby they looked tired.

Am proud to call them my team. Go Flames Go. You outplayed the Jets and that takes
A lot of desire and the boys displayed that.

So just noticed the Flames had 4 straight seasons from 87-88 to 90-91 where they had at least 20 wins by 3 goals or more. I don’t know if it’s been updated on NHL.com but on there it says we currently have 12. Oddly enough 2015-16 and 2017-18 were the only two years we had 20 losses of three goals or more. We currently have 2. I think if this keeps up the Flames could end up with some serious hardware this year. Everything but the Art Ross and Rocket Richard could be had by Flames.
