Flames at 2019 World Juniors: Slovakia with glorious triumph over Kazakhstan

Three Calgary Flames prospects were in action on Sunday at the 2019 World Junior Championship. The winless Slovakian team scored early and often en route to a rout over the equally winless Kazakhstan.

Slovakia 11, Kazakhstan 2

If you had read that Slovakia would give lowly Kazakhstan the biggest butt-kicking of their World Juniors to date, you probably wouldn’t believe it. But Slovakia scored twice in the first 32 seconds and led 6-0 by the end of the first period.

Kazakhstan scored twice, both times on the power play, but the Slovaks just rolled their lines, played their game, and seemingly did their best not to embarrass Kazakhstan. The best thing about the Kazakhstan performance was their goal song.

All three Flames prospects on Team Slovakia hit the scoresheet:

  • Milos Roman had a goal, an assist, a minor penalty, two shots and a plus-1 rating in 14:10.
  • Adam Ruzicka had two goals, an assist, a minor penalty, five shots and a plus-2 rating in 13:52.
  • Martin Pospisil had one assist, a minor penalty, two shots and a plus-2 rating in 11:57.

Slovakia was expected to beat Kazakhstan, and they did. Thoroughly.

Up Next: Slovakia advances to the medal round due to their victory. Their round robin is over and they’ll finish fourth in Group B. They’ll face the first place team from Group A (either Canada or Russia) on Wednesday.

  • Off the wall

It was a pretty lopsided affair for sure.
Kazakhstan’s starting goalie was chased after 5 minutes of play. It was 3-0 Slovakia at that point.
Ruzicka had two of the goals, one 5vs5, the other on the PP.

It’s interesting from what I observed that Milos Roman was used on the 1st unit PP. Perhaps that’s why he had more ice time than Ruzicka. Both were used as centres. Both on the PP.

Roman looked good, fast and quite engaged in the game. I really like this kid, I’m not sure what his stats are, however I think he could be better than Ruzicka. More complete player- if you will.

Ruzicka was pretty dominant when he chose to be. I was impressed in the first period how he back -checked to break up a threatening two on one. He’s a big boy, nice soft hands, surprisingly good backhand, a pretty good shot, who knows how well he’ll still develop. He still looks promising.

It was 6-0 after the 1st period. Kazakhstan only had two shots on goal, so you knew it was going to be a blow -out.

Pospisil was ok, didn’t stand out much, other than taking a penalty and roughing up a lesser opponent.

It was a difficult game to judge their talent, the Slovakia team looked like they were playing a Minor league team, rather than a National one.

They just kept rolling the lines, picking apart a bad defensive Kaz squad.

I did enjoy the atmosphere at our local arena. The fans were 100% behind the inferior Kazakhstan team. Loud chants erupted, encouraging them to score, however they could only muster up two goals- all from the extra man advantage. But when they scored, the building roared and the chanting of the “ Sweet Caroline” song came alive.
You gotta love the underdog. It looks like Victoria has adopted them, even though they are likely done.

I stopped keeping track of our prospects after the first period. Sorry folks, I decided to drink and enjoy myself instead.
    Cheers FN

  • Hathaway’s Dad

Just got back from the game. Ruzicka was also named Slovakia’s player of the game. And Pospisil is all kinds of nasty, even under the WJC microscope.

  • Harley Hotchkiss’s Ghost

“Martin Pospisil had one assist, a minor penalty, two shots and a plus-2 rating in 11:57“

After the year he is having in the USHL, it’s kind of surprising that Pospisil has been relagated to third line duty in the games I have seen. Adam Liska could barley put up 0.50 PPG in the OHL and he’s getting crazy minutes. Pospisil would have double the points Liska has if he was getting PP1 time.

Anyway, glad Milos Roman is getting the opportunity he is, Vancouver doesn’t play a big time offensive system, I think his numbers would be better if he played on another WHL Club.

Adam Ruzicka is so talented, but man is he LAZY. It’s funny Craig Button keeps on calling him out (brother Todd our head scout clearly wants his effort level to improve).

Pretty hard to determine much when the other team had hard enough time getting the puck even into the offensive zone let alone get a shot , I did like the one goal where there was a nice tic tac toe quick touch play with prosipol I believe. I think there was a power play that had all 3 Flames prospects on it ,which was Kewl !
