Despite struggles, Flames managed to get some award votes

The National Hockey League has doled out its awards for the 2019-20 campaign – aside from the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Despite having a somewhat disappointing regular season, several Calgary Flames representatives got onto the various ballots that determined the awards.

FlamesNation player evaluation: Matthew Tkachuk

Four years into his NHL career, it’s already safe to label Matthew Tkachuk as “damn good.” He’s already one of the NHL’s top talents who brings everything a team needs to win a lot of games. The Flames went without Tkachuk for the final four games of their first round playoff series against the Dallas…

FlamesNation player evaluation: Noah Hanifin

Intangible hockey laws dictate that, save for some generational exceptions, defencemen take longer to develop than forwards. Elite scorers establish themselves in their early-20s and ride their primes until they putter out by 35. But defencemen need to hone their craft for years, smooth over scrunched bits in the tapestries of their game. Scoring goals…

FlamesNation player evaluation: David Rittich

What is David Rittich? After four seasons in North America, and two and a half in the National Hockey League, it’s clear that the Calgary Flames have found something in “Big Save Dave.” But is he a backup? A starter? An All-Star? It’s unclear, and the window for him to find his game consistently might…

The Flames are, and should be, interested in Jacob Markstrom

I believe the Calgary Flames will seriously pursue Jacob Markstrom if they get the chance. The pending unrestricted free agent has put together three straight solid seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, including a 2019-20 campaign that rightly put him in Vezina Trophy conversations. Whether Markstrom gets to free agency is still up in the air,…

FlamesNation player evaluation: Cam Talbot

One season ago, the Calgary Flames got Cam Talbot at a bargain price on a one year deal. A few years removed from being pretty damn good for Edmonton, he had fallen out of favour and was functionally Philadelphia’s third-stringer as he headed into free agency. But someone signed as a reclamation project ended up…

The unstoppable anxiety of drafting goalies early

Folks, every couple of years a really great goaltending prospect pops up on the NHL Draft radar. This year’s version is Yaroslav Askarov, an incredible Russian goalie who will definitely go in the first round. Some team will take that swing and probably be happy with it. But man, drafting a goaltender early makes a…

The 2020 NHL Draft is scheduled for October 6 and 7, conducted remotely. The Calgary Flames have a first round selection and will pick 19th overall. The Flames are rumoured to be interested in everybody

It’s no secret that the Calgary Flames didn’t measure up in the 2019-20 season. Their first round playoff exit was followed by a lot of soul-search and analysis by management, culminating with Geoff Ward’s hiring as head coach on Monday. Sticking with the same coach makes it seem likely that the Flames will be making…

2020 Flames First Round Targets: John-Jason Peterka

The 2020 NHL Draft is scheduled for October 6 and 7, conducted remotely. The Calgary Flames have a first round selection and will pick 19th overall.
