Flames vs Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Flames open a four-game eastern road trip on the heels of their first defeat with head coach Darryl Sutter behind the bench. The team dropped a 7-3 decision to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night, ending a promising three-game win streak. Calgary’s recent three-game tear marked the first time the team had strung together consecutive wins since early February, and just the second time they have won more than two in a row this season.

The Flames have still managed to keep things close, picking up at least a point in eight of their past 12 overall contests. However, unlike recent campaigns, during which they emerged as a consistent threat on the road, the team has struggled to produce results away from the friendly confines of Scotiabank Saddledome.

Calgary has averaged just 2.14 goals per game during its current 2-4-1 run on the road, and has compiled a middling 6-8-2 away record this season. Road disappointments have been key to the Flames’ struggles to remain in the playoff picture in the North Division, where they remain stalled in sixth place in the standings, three points back of the fourth-place Montreal Canadiens.

However, timing may be on the Flames’ side as they get set to battle a struggling Toronto team. Currently mired in their worst slump of the season, the Maple Leafs look to Friday’s series opener as -165 favorites at online sports betting sites. The Maple Leafs have been idle since dropping a 4-3 decision in Ottawa, which marked the team’s fifth loss in six outings. Sitting atop the North Division standings by a wide nine-point margin as recently as March 3, Toronto now finds itself in a dogfight for the top of the division.

The Maple Leafs enter the weekend deadlocked with Edmonton at 40 points, and just two points up on the third-place Winnipeg Jets. Toronto has struggled at both ends of the ice, and has been outscored by a wide 23-15 margin during its six-game swoon, powering a 4-0 run for the OVER in totals betting. However, recent meetings between these teams have tended to be low scoring, with the Maple Leafs tallying just six total goals while losing three of five to Calgary on home ice.
