It’s a slow night on the ice tonight as one of the three scheduled games is postponed due to weather conditions. The Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres will play tomorrow instead as they battle the snow.
Tonight on the docket, we have the Detroit Red Wings taking on the Florida Panthers and the Montreal Canadiens facing off against the New Jersey Devils.
The Red Wings and Panthers are missing top six forwards as Patrick Kane and Aleksander Barkov are both out with lower body injuries. The Devils get a big part of their forward core back tonight in Timo Meier. However, they are still missing their franchise centre, Jack Hughes.
Florida Panthers money line & Matthew Tkachuk point (-134)
After a lengthy nine-game winning streak, the Panthers have lost their previous two games. Their last game was a 5-4 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks, off the stick of Alex Killorn just 48 seconds into the final frame.
The Panthers have defeated today’s opponent, the Red Wings, in 10 straight head-to-head matchups. While Detroit has been gaining momentum as they’ve won five of their last six games, it’s the historical domination the Panthers have that gives us an edge here.
With only 20 points in the first 29 games to start the season, it was a slow start to the year for last year’s playoff standout, Matthew Tkachuk. Since then, he has 22 points in just 14 games. Dating back to his days with the Flames, Tkachuk is on a six-game point streak, totalling 10 points against the Red Wings.
Alex Lyon gets the start for the Red Wings tonight, whom Tkachuk and the Panthers are all too familiar with. Lyon was the Panthers saviour last season, stepping up and backing up Sergei Bobrovsky when Spencer Knight had to step away. The familiarity from shooting on him every day in practice during their lengthy playoff run should give the Panthers an edge on how to beat him tonight.
Matthew Tkachuk over 3.5 shots on goal (-125)
Your $10 bet would return $18.00.
Points are not the only part of Tkachuk’s game that has been making a resurgence — his shooting game has come back to what hockey fans were enamoured by last season.
Tkachuk has cleared this line in five of his last six games, averaging 5.5 shots on 8.3 shot attempts per game. Comparing his home and road splits, Tkachuk covers his shots on goal line at home 6% better than he does on the road.
In their only meeting this season, Tkachuk finished with five shots on 10 shot attempts. The Red Wings allow the fifth most shots on goal to right-wingers, averaging 7.3 shots per game. Ranking as the eighth most disciplined team over the last twenty days, the Red Wings allow 2.4 powerplay opportunities per game. Tkachuk is second on the team in 5-on-5 shots on goal this season.
Blake Coleman Point – WON – (+8.00)
Dylan Guenther over 1.5 Shots on Goal – LOSS – (-15.00)
Dylan Guenther Goal – LOSS – (-5.00)
Coleman extends his point streak as he leads the charge for the comeback, scoring the first Flames goal in the third period. Dylan Guenther had back-to-back shot attempts in overtime, missing the net and having one blocked to finish with one shot on three shot attempts.
All-Time Record: 13-13 (-$2.72)
