Despite a delayed start to his season, the Calgary Flames’ top goaltending prospect will get a chance to make history in the 2020-21 Western Hockey League season. Dustin Wolf will rejoin the Everett Silvertips when they begin their season on Mar. 19.
Wolf, 19, is heading into what’s probably his final stint in the WHL – he’s eligible to return as an overager in 2021-22, but he’s already arguably out-grown the league and will be seeking a bigger challenge in the American Hockey League. He turns 20 in April.
In the meantime, he’ll likely be leaned on heavily in Everett with a weekend-heavy 24 game schedule exclusively against familiar U.S. Division foes in Portland, Seattle, Tri-Cty and Spokane. Everyone spare a thought for backup Braden Holt, who probably won’t get a ton of playing time this season given the circumstances.
Wolf has a career 88-31-6 record in the Dub, with a 1.85 goals against average, a .934 save percentage and 20 shutouts. He led the WHL in GAA and save percentage in each of the past two seasons, was a first-team conference all-star (twice), and was named the CHL’s top scholastic player in 2018-19 and the top goaltender in 2019-20. He was backup for the United States when they won a gold medal at this past winter’s World Juniors. He has achieved everything except for playoff success.
Given the complicated quarantine regulations in Washington State, Wolf is expected to head to Everett for camp fairly soon. It’s unclear if he’ll suit up for Stockton at all this season before he heads back to junior.
Here’s where Wolf sits among Dub goaltenders, all-time.

  1. Tyson Sexsmith (Vancouver; 2004-09) – 26 (in 179 games)
  2. Carter Hart (Everett; 2013-18) – 26 (in 190 games)
