Flames prospect update: picking up steam

2 years agoThe Calgary Flames continue to chug along and so do the seasons of many of their top prospects. A lot more of them will be getting going later this week when Stockton gets going this weekend. In the interim, just continue to be impressed by Jakob Pelletier.
Let’s check in on all the Flames’ prospects.

2020 third round pick Jake Boltmann is playing NCAA hockey, which is good! He’s playing the third pairing on a .500 college team and hasn’t gotten embarrassed, which is pretty good for a 19-year-old playing at a high level.
But he still hasn’t gotten a single point (at either the NCAA or USHL level) since being drafted.

Feuk has had a bit of an up-and-down year, playing in Sweden’s second tier, going back to junior, then returning to the second tier when Sweden’s junior circuit got shut down. He’s since been loaned to Sweden’s third tier and so far he’s one of the team’s most productive players. Granted, Sweden’s third tier isn’t full of players with a ton of upside – it’s basically the Swedish ECHL – but scoring a bunch at 19 is better than not, regardless of the level.

New Brunswick remains a national COVID-19 hot-spot and the next scheduled Sea Dogs game is Mar. 3, though that may be revised if the situation improves. Francis hasn’t played a game since Nov. 18 and he has yet to debut for Saint John.

Kinnvall is injured. He’s been out two weeks so far from an estimated six-to-eight week injury. HV71 is in the middle of the playoff pack: they could make the qualifying playoffs, the relegation playoffs, or fall somewhere in the middle and just have their season end.

Kuznetsov had no points this week and he’s slightly off his previous 0.5 points-per-game pace. He needs a couple points this weekend to return to that pace. He still remains a fixture on UConn’s top pairing, though.

Remember when Mattson was a healthy scratch all the time? (Basically his first two years of college.) Well, he might be back in that hockey purgatory, as he didn’t dress for either of MSU’s games this weekend. He hasn’t had points in months despite playing a regular shift, so perhaps this was inevitable.

Nikolayev has returned to junior with Buran’s season winding down. But so far, his return is what he probably would’ve hoped for: Loko is undefeated and he has four points in four games.

Spoiler: Pelletier is really good at hockey. He had five points over three games this week and has points in five of six games since returning from the World Juniors. He’s been good and consistent, and that’s what you expect from a first round pick (and what Val-d’Or hoped to get out of their captain).

Sveningsson registered a power play goal this week.
MODO has about a dozen games left and probably won’t qualify for playoffs or the relegation tournament, so Sveningsson has about that many games left to make a case for being signed by the Flames. (It doesn’t look promising, as he doesn’t move the needle a ton offensively.)

Chechelev’s save percentage keeps sliding as he’s getting the most game action he’s gotten in awhile. It’s a bit of a challenge that after a period of being fairly idle, relatively speaking, he’s playing a bunch in junior where often defensive play is, uh, variable. He’s lost his last five starts for Chekhov.
