Post Game: The Devil Went Down To Newark

devil

(The Devil then left because Newark is literally worse than Hell)

azevedo

(Azevedo’s a bit of a rube and protects his twitter account so I had to take a picture instead of embedding it proper)

I had to admit Justin had me there, and even though Young Guns era games vs. Lemaire’s Wild games had been blocked out of my memory, I can concede that those games were most assuredly worse.

Still, this one was drudgingly, Ben Hanowskingly slow and plodding, and it was soooo hard to watch, to the point where I decided I was going to kind of phone this one and only dedicate the amount of time and due analysis you expect from a pro like me that this game deserved.

So with that in mind, read about this game after the jump!

The Flames Are Making Me Work

I was literally going to have absolutely nothing after the jump, because that’s how awful the game was, but then the third period happened and Karri Ramo collectively all juiced our loins.

That’s all we’re going to talk about here. Karri Ramo was absolutely incredible in this game, Gio continues to be a mensch, and KARRI RAMO ended the Devils’ playoff hopes (no not really, but it’s close)

So now all I’m going to do is just write Karri Ramo’s name over and over.

The Red Warrior

Mark Cundari was pretty good.

In the end

Yes unfortunately it does look like 5th or 6th draft selection. Should not be a surprise to Burke or the owners. The core vets on this team play very well when they are not under playoff pressure. That was also the case last year!
The FN hockey fans who have actually played the game at a high level will understand my comments.

    • jeremywilhelm

Well, I don’t think anyone will argue we will probably be officially finishing in the 5th spot. Why everyone says 5th or 6th is because 99.9% of the people know full well that a team after us will probably win the lottery before we would, hence moving up to 1st & we would drop to picking 6th.

My biggest question to everyone is how in the f*@# are we winning this game?????? What’s with this team? If we needed to win tonight so we could get into 8th spot it would have been 5-1 Jersey. Geeesh!!!

    Tank-O-Dex:

The average number of games per player played by Flames in tonight’s game was 46.8, which is 60.0% of the season to date. That’s not quite as low as we saw in some games late last season, but it is definitely quality tanking.

    Ramo:

Ramo’s season sv% is now 0.9142, which is slightly above the league average of 0.9136. It’s also below the average for goalies who have played 30 or more games (who are likely starters) of 0.9156. Still, Ramo has had to be excellent to make up for the ground he lost early in the season while adapting to the NHL.

Will Ramo be this good next season? I haven’t a clue. Goalies are freakin’ voodoo. He’ll certainly be a legit NHL starter if he continues to perform as well as he has late this season.

  • FlamesRule

so the nucks were officially eliminated today… HAHAHAHAA

to those complaining about our win and our “worsening” draft position, what more can you complain about?

    schaedenfreude. that is all.

  • FlamesRule

Canucks had 18 shots and we’re shut out…they’re a ghost ship drifting towards the finish line. Heartless with no one at the helm… Winnipeg isn’t going to win another game while we of course will win all three, finish with 81 points and potentially jump over several teams enroute to drafting Adrian Kempe… Who? That’s right Adrian Kempe.

I know our line up is in sync with tank mode but why are Gio and Brodie playing 28 minutes a night!?!?

  • beloch

I actually didn’t get to watch this one, but one thing sticks out on the the stat sheet over at extraskater. Monahan played 20 minutes against top competition with not a lot of offensive zonestarts and was #3 on the team in terms of cf% and #2 in terms of CF% Rel. Yes, he spanked all the usual suspects (Squid, Brodano, you name it) in this match.

Did he look like a beast out there? Seriously, it’s great to see this kid start to rock in terms of possession stats a little!

  • I don’t think this franchise is destined to ever draft in the top-5 (even if a #5 pick has the highest odds at the moment). We’ve picked sixth, what, four times, and never higher? Anyways, if picking 5th or 6th this year means we somehow pick in the top-2 next year (dream scenario – we play good enough to be a playoff bubble team that barely misses the playoffs, then defy the odds and win the McDavid/Eichel sweepstakes), I’m cool with that.

Where is Adam Larsson? He’s not listed as injured, but also not in the line-up? Is it too early to say he’s a bust? People thought Victor Hedman was headed that way too before he really broke out, but I don’t think he was as underwhelming as Larsson. That would be my biggest worry with drafting an Ekblad or another D so early, they’re always more of wild-card as 18-year olds.

    • We’ve picked sixth, what, four times, and never higher?

In true Baalzamon fashion, I’d like to make the irrelevant observation that the Atlanta Flames picked 2nd overall in their first two seasons.
