Flames Take Sam Bennett at 4th Overall

The Calgary Flames finally have their Sam.

In a move telegraphed when the previous three teams made the picks that everyone – more or less – had predicted they would, the Calgary Flames selected Kingston Frontenacs forward Sam Bennett at 4th overall.

Bennett was the last of the vaunted “big four” in this year’s draft. He’s earned comparisons to former Flame Doug Gilmour in terms of playing style. Considering the Flames haven’t been a physically tough team to play against in recent years, Bennett’s combination of size, speed and tenacity will fill a lot of holes in the Flames organization.

And he can do pull ups now, so what’s not to love?

This is a great pick, a guy who looks like Kane and plays like Gilmour. His greatest asset is his compete level which is the mantra Hartley has been preaching. Bennett, Gaudreau, Poirier, Arnold, Baertschi, Monahan, the future keeps getting brighter.

I’ll agree that Mckeown makes sense at 34 especially since the Flames seem to like drafting team mates but no love for Barbeshev? The more I read about him the more I like him… Although maybe we should chill on centres for a bit.

You literally cannot have too many quality centers. If by chance you end up with; Thornton, Marleau, Couture, Pavelski, and Hertl, you just convert some of them into wingers.

  • Scary Gary

It’s impossible not to get excited about Bennett. Great speed and a quick, accurate shot, not to mention playmaking ability.

I can’t wait to see him in 2015/2016!

    • Ed Wailin'

There was no red tape with monahan. You have to be turning 20 by a certain date to play in the AHL. Monahan was 18/19, therefore either NHL or back to junior. The same thing with bennett. Hes not eligible to play in the AHL until 2016-2017. He’ll be in the NHL by that point anyways
