Introducing the 2015-16 Calgary Flames

The club will open the season with 22 active players – 3 goalies, 6 defenders and 13 forwards – and 3 players on the injured list. (You get to fill the spots of the injured guys, but you don’t get salary cap relief.) As of now, the Flames have a cap hit of around $69.7 million.

In Trelliving’s interview on the Fan960 this morning, he was very clear that the Flames would not keep 3 goalies up for long (although he refused to provide much detail on how long that would be). So, once the goalie situation is resolved there will be 2 positions to fill on the 23 man roster. Add a 3rd position, given that Kulak can be sent back as he’s on a two-way contract. There will soon be room for all 3 IR players.

This creates a new problem; there will be 8 NHL Defenseman, and 14 forwards. One of the current NHL defensemen will be either traded or waived.
Question: Why didn’t the Flames keep an extra forward with the current room afforded to them now?

It makes no sense unless Joe Colburne is on the team.

It’s time to end the “Always earned never given.” Colburne has not earned this spot. There are better options in the organization.

Forwards: A good number of elites, plenty of bottom nines and one Bollig (wow, his points / games really smells).

Defense: awesome top half, one middle rotation, a few flaming hot messes and a brilliantly intriguing prospect who battled onto the starting roster.

      Goalies: TBD – also intriguing.

Sure we may not win the cup this year but there’s enough narrative to kick the season off just right. Love it.

Bring on beer/lunch time down under for season opener!
