Bit off topic, but given the focus on the Oilers getting a 1-2 D, Phaneuf was just traded to the Sens in part of a 9 player deal. Looks like the Leafs are shedding assets.

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenceman Dion Phaneuf from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a nine-player trade.
Ottawa also acquired defenceman Cody Donaghey and forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey and Ryan Rupert.
The Maple Leafs get defenceman Jared Cowen and forwards Milan Michalek, Colin Greening and Tobias Lindberg, along with a 2017 second-round draft pick.
Phaneuf, the biggest name in the deal, has 24 points and 67 penalty minutes in 51 games for Toronto this season.
Ottawa starts the day four points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after a 5-1 win over Tampa Bay last night.

Not a bad deal for the Leafs. They took on a bunch of ugly contracts for next year, but after that they’re free and clear.

Man will they suck next year though.

  • Lowe But Now High Expectations

You can see the Red Wing influence in Shanahan with the Leafs. Leaf haters won’t like this, but they are doing things the right way. Dumping bad contracts, keeping their draft picks. And IMHO, after Mcdavid, Mitch Marner will be the best player from last years draft. And sending him back to junior was the best decision.

    washington keeps calling for hamhuis.

but we could easily get burakovsky/kuznetsov + bowey + 2nd rounder for edler, weber and hamhuis but that would deplete our d depth

Amazingly, JD Burke has found a new low. I guess he knows exactly where all the trade talks are at, and his closing line just motivates me to say F JD, I will stick with my team if it’s all the same to him.

Let’s see what happens after the trade deadline before passing judgement. Great leadership of the Canucks CA staff JD, your blind devotion to all things Corsi was finally outstripped by your total lack of class.

Maybe another blog about how the Canucks should immediately pick up any player waived by another team will be the answer to building a contender.
