According to a report from the Czech Republic, legendary forward Jaromir Jagr’s time with the Calgary Flames may be coming to an end. Well, sort of.
DenikSport’s Zdenek Janda is reporting that Jagr might be returning to his hometown club (and the team he owns) Rytiri Kladno in the Czech secondary league on a loan from the Flames.
Based on his report, and digging through the CBA, here’s how it would probably work:
Jagr is currently on the injured reserve, so he’d need to be activated and then waived to clear him off the NHL roster. Once he clears waivers, he would be eligible to be loaned to a team outside of the NHL. Typically player contracts only include provisions for being loaned to the American Hockey League, but it’s not unheard of for European players to include clauses for potential loans to European teams.
Via Google Translate:
“But after a series of talks, another scenario seems more promising: the Olympic champion will go to Kladno to play back, get back to the good. With Flames still official, he will continue to run a contract. So it is not excluded that he will return to the NHL during the season.”
The exact terms of any loan would need to be worked out between the two parties – and soon, because the Czech secondary league’s deadline for loans is Jan. 31 – and would also be subject to the current transfer agreement with the Czech Republic’s hockey governing body. Janda’s report states that Jagr would join Kladno in time to play next Saturday’s game with Kladno against HC Benatky nad Jizerou.
His NHL contract would continue so he’d remain on Flames reserve list. This is important, because players need to be on the reserve list after the trade deadline to be eligible to play in the postseason.
We’ve reached out to many parties for comment and more information. For now, until more information from more parties becomes available, probably take this report with a grain of salt.
To the fans,
Thank you for all your money folks! Sorry no refunds on Jagr jerseys.
Signed,
Ownership
My Jags jersey is the best 300 bucks I’ve ever spent do you even watch hockey?
I don’t imagine anyone cares that they bought a Flames jersey with the future HOF’s name on it.
It will be a memorable keepsake for those fans.
Try harder to contribute something tangible..
Which raises the question:
Why look for refunds on Oilers jersies when they can used as toilet pucks – priceless!!!
Thanks for the laugh Puckhead just about fell out of the chair!
Well I’m befuddled. So Jagr has to
1. Be activated off the IR.
2. Clear waiver’s
3. Report to Kladno by January 31st
Seems like a lot of moving parts for a simple loan…
But what happens in the off chance another team claims him off waivers? Can Jags still be loaned to Kladno from another team and what about if the Flames want him back or as an extra body during the playoffs should they need him. Can they recall him at anytime again from Kladno?
I believe if a player is claimed off waivers he has to clear waivers again before he could be demoted or loaned.
2 weeks is about the max for a conditioning stint.
I believe a player claimed off of waivers must be placed on the NHL team.
Jagr’s only making $1 million against the cap this season, and the current cap exemption is $1.05 million, so his entire cap hit could be “buried” (so to speak).
Merci Monsieur Pike.
… Couldn’t they just assign him to the Czech team on a conditioning stint? Like you could to the AHL.
2 weeks is about the max for a conditioning stint.
How would his return work? Would he need to clear waivers for a return to the Flames prior to or for the playoffs?
No waivers on a return, just on an assignment or buyout.
if this is true, this might be a good solution for both parties. Jagr is currently not in good enough shape or mindset to be in the NHL, so maybe he could work himself back up to pace back home and be helpful in the playoffs/playoff drive.
If Jagr is loaned to the Check league do the Flames get the same cap exemption they would if he was assigned to the AHL? I think yes, so they save about 350M in cap space that could be used on a deadline pickup.
So potentially it could turn out to be a long distance conditioning stint.
Doesn’t make any sense to me.
Another rumour that doesn’t happen..
Something like this could and should happen if the NHL could get it’s Collective head of it”s butt. Cap hit should stay the same and a simple loan made possible. Too many rules too many rules.
Different rules for different leagues; ie drafted kids can become free agents but CHL kids can’t. Don’t know about the Eruoes? It should be consistent.
