Flames place Matt Taormina on waivers

Defenseman Matt Taormina has been placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames for reassignment to the Stockton Heat. He was previously on the season-opening injured reserve but presumably is now healthy enough to head to the American Hockey League.

Taormina was acquired in tandem with Rinat Valiev from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade that saw Brett Kulak go the other way.

The Heat will be looking forward to Taormina’s arrival. At 31 years old, he’s a tenured veteran that has flourished in the AHL. With Rasmus Andersson called up to the Flames in the meantime, Taormina’s presence should definitely contribute to team’s offensive totals.

… What? You don’t miss the guy we just got in a trade and hasn’t played because he was injured? I’m hoping he can play on his offside because the RHD options in Stockton are non-existent. I think losing Fox in the trade is going to come back to haunt us and should’ve traded a different prospect or even a pick.

I get what you’re saying. That extra rhd in the system, particularly one with high end potential, would have been nice. But as its been widely reported Tre was told he wouldn’t sign here there’s really no bearing on Stockton’s rhd options from the trade.

Our defense in Stockton defiantly needs the help.

With Valiev’s visa issues to go along with Taormina and Hogstrom injuries the Heats defense has looked atrocious with a bunch of average to below average AHL dmen playing roles 2-6 in the first couple games.

Its no wonder Gillies and Parsons got lit up in the first 2 games of the year.
