Dillon Dube the lone Flame in TSN’s Top 50 NHL prospects

Our friends at TSN have compiled their annual Top 50 ranking of the best NHL-team affiliated prospects. The Calgary Flames are represented by forward Dillon Dube, who is the 48th-ranked prospect on the list.

Dube, 20, is in his first professional season after a superb junior career with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets. He’s bounced between the Flames and the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat so far; he has one goal and five points in 23 NHL games and two goals and 11 points in 11 games with Stockton. Dube was selected by the Flames in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Coincidentally, The Athletic’s Corey Pronman has also released his listing of the top NHL-affiliated prospects (paywall): 2018 pick Emilio Pettersen is the lone Flames property on his list, ranked 52nd.

Emilio Petterson currently leads all true freshman in scoring (including Joel Farabee whose 32nd on this list) in the NCAA. If he keeps leading his age group in scoring as he develops he’ll be on this list sooner than later. Not that I love this list. Vitali Kravtsov at #1 and Grigori Denisenko at #2 are both way to high for me. They’re not even Top. 10 for me.

Akil Thomas falling to where he did in the draft last year was criminal. He should be way higher than 44.

Just shows we need to restock the cupboards come draft time. Also all of our blue chipppers have graduated to the show. Wasn’t Valimaki in the top 10 or close to last year?

Really looking forward to some good drafting the next few years. We don’t have a second this year, but we have that first finally.

On a related note, we really need one of our top forward prospects to get into gear here. In a league that is increasingly relying on ECL deals to bolster a cap strapped roster, one of Mangiapane or Dube (or Quine?) needs to start doing something.

Out of all our forward prospects I see Dube becoming a real difference maker in the league sooner rather than later. I think Phillips has been overlooked probably his whole life because of his size, I think that will drive him to eventually making this team and becoming an NHLer. I’m not sold on Manipane yet.. he has flashes but I’m afraid he might be a tweener.

Yeah, Mangiapane will be interesting. He’s had his looks tho, and if he potted a few by this point, by my count about a good 4-6 high danger scoring chances he should have cashed in on, we would be having a much different discussion.

That being said, scoring chances don’t matter if they are not going in, as is the case with Czarnik. And after a certain point, we have to stop attributing it to bad luck and such (Czarnik). But I do think its a mental game, especially with youngins, and I am hopeful that once Mangiapane gets a few goals or even assists, he’ll have the confidence and timing down enough to start finishing. What worries me about him, is him always falling down. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he will be a tweener. So we’ll just have to wait and see I guess!
