June 5, 2004 is a date that likely causes stress among the Calgary Flames’ faithful fans. On that date, the Flames lost 3-2 in double overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Well, at least according to video review guidelines of that day.

Martin Gelinas appeared to beat Nikolai Khabibulin with a redirect with his skate to put the Flames up 3-2 in the third period of Game 6. But play was not stopped, the goal was not signaled, and the game continued. The Flames had the chance to win the Stanley Cup on home ice and instead lost in double overtime, eventually losing the series in seven stressful games.

At the time the league didn’t have the ability to whistle down the play and conduct a thorough review. Nor did they have the many, many camera angles that they do now. It has been oft-discussed that Flames ownership recommended to the Board of Governors that video review be re-examined in the years that followed. Whether they did or not, video review resources were expanded in the years that followed.

As for the no-goal call 15 years ago today, it’s pretty obvious to Flames fans that it was in.
