Flames release Devante Smith-Pelly from try-out

The Calgary Flames have sent a former Stanley Cup winner packing. The club announced on Saturday morning that they’ve released winger Devante Smith-Pelly from his professional try-out.
Smith-Pelly, 27, won a Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018. Since then, though, he’s bounced around a bit – a victim of the tightening salary cap and some inconsistency on his part. He ended up demoted to the AHL’s Hershey Bears midway through last season and didn’t get a nibble in free agency.
He suited up for four pre-season games for the Flames, but didn’t impress. With the glut of forwards in the bubble group, he was arguably the easiest decision for Flames management to make.
The Flames now have 26 players remaining in camp: two goalies, eight defensemen and 16 forwards.
