In advance of tonight’s meeting with the Arizona Coyotes, the Calgary Flames have made an interesting roster move. The club has announced that they’ve recalled forward Matthew Phillips from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.
Phillips, 21, is a Calgary product and a second year pro with the Heat. After a solid freshman year, he’s emerged as one of the AHL’s top players. In 22 games this season, he has 25 points – good for seventh in the AHL.
It’s unclear whether there’s an injury or merely the back-to-back situation that prompted the recall. But given his performance, it’s not shocking to share that Flames hockey ops have been looking for an opportunity to get him into some NHL games.
Phillips’ recall uses up the final open roster spot on the club’s 23-man roster.
