We’re into the second week of November and pretty much all of the Calgary Flames’ major prospects have begun their seasons – aside from Connor Zary, but we’ll get to that.
Let’s check in with the Flames’ players outside of the NHL.
This and that:
- Johannes Kinnvall and Tyler Persons are on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve after suffering injuries.
- Walker Duehr was recalled to the Flames but hasn’t dressed yet.
- Connor Zary has been activated from the season-opening injury reserve and is expected to make his season debut for Stockton on Wednesday against Bakersfield.
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 12 | 11 | 6 | 17 | 9 | 15 | 9 | 37.52 |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 | +3.09 |
Beck was held out from Ottawa’s game on Tuesday due to bumps and bruises, but isn’t expected to miss much time. He is, simply put, good at scoring goals. He’s shooting 39%, which is clearly something he can sustain all season.
Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 9 | 1 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 18.20 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | +6.48 |
By any standard for a college blueliner, Boltmann had a very nice offensive week. He seems to have turned a corner after not registering a single point at all last season in either the USHL or NCAA.
Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 10 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 14.86 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.62 |
Ciona had a goal this week, but also stayed out of the penalty box. Since his suspension last month, he’s taken just a single minor penalty.
Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE
Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 5 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 32.14 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -36.74 |
Coronato had a quieter week offensively as the Crimson faced much tougher opposition than the previous week, but the team still performed well with a pair of wins. Coronato had an assist, but was a big factor in each game for Harvard.
Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 5 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 23.91 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Duehr was recalled to the NHL.
Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF, HockeyEttan
Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Allsvenskan up to date | 6 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 10.85 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
HockeyEttan up to date | 5 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Västerviks was off this week.
Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | n/a |
QMJHL up to date | 4 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 5 | 2 | 29.11 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | +5.82 |
Francis seems to be finding his stride with the Sea Dogs after spending so much time away at Flames camp and with Stockton. He’s scoring at a good rate, but not quite at his usual torrid offensive pace.
Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 6 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 7 | 4 | 4 | 53.14 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | -13.28 |
Gawdin had a pretty productive week for the Heat, averaging a point per game.
Emil Heineman – LW, Leksands IF, SHL/CHL
Florida’s second round pick (43rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; acquired via trade; #14-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
SHL up to date | 18 | 5 | 1 | 6 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 16.29 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +1.02 |
CHL up to date | 6 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Heineman had a goal from his usual spot on Leksands’ fourth line. His club has a Champions League round of 16 match this coming week against Austrian team EC KAC.
Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 13 | 4 | 6 | 10 | 8 | 7 | 5 | 17.91 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Huckins hasn’t played since Oct. 30, a game where he had a goal and a fight. We’re presuming he suffered an injury in said fight, but we haven’t heard anything definitive either way.

Up to date | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Jordan remains listed as out week-to-week by the WHL due to an illness.
Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 14 | 9 | 14 | 23 | 13 | 16 | 10 | 43.51 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 4 | 4 | 2 | +4.98 |
We’re running out of superlatives for Kerins. He had many points, more than two points per game. He’s one of the top offensive players in the OHL.
Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -3.98 |
Kirkland has settled into a secondary role for the Heat so far this season. He had an assist.
Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.
Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Arizona State didn’t play any games this week.
Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | n/a |
Kuznetsov remains a steady presence on the Heat’s third pairing, but he’s still searching for his first pro point.
Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 9.96 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -5.98 |
Mackey had a quiet week by his standards, playing a ton on Stockton’s top pairing but not hitting the scoresheet.
Mitchell Mattson – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s fifth round pick (126th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 6 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 9.10 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | +9.10 |
Good news: Mattson had two points in a single game! Bad news: that game was an absolute shellacking at the hands of the stacked University of Michigan squad.
Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 9 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 17.86 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -5.10 |
Nikolaev remains a really interesting, quietly effective player for Tri-City. He had an assist setting up a shorthanded goal and another setting up an overtime goal as the Storm won both of their outings.
Josh Nodler – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 10 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 4 | 7 | 4 | 21.84 |

Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -10.96 |
Pelletier has already established himself as a really reliable, useful player for Stockton. He’s second on the team in scoring and one of the most productive rookies in the AHL this season.
Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 9.96 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | +1.99 |
Pettersen chipped in an assist this week to double his season-to-date scoring.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 34.87 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -4.98 |
Another week, another couple points for Stockton’s offensive metronome. Phillips is, quite simply, a really consistent, reliable hockey player at the AHL level.
Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 19.93 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -3.98 |
Philp had a goal this week. He’s not as productive this season as he has been in the past, but he’s good for key goals at key times.
Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 15 | 5 | 11 | 16 | 11 | 9 | 7 | 24.84 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | -0.39 |
Poirier continues chugging along as one of the most consistent offensive defensemen in the QMJHL.
Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Pospisil missed one game this week with what’s being termed a minor injury.

CHL up to date | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Strömgren played once this week. Sweden’s in their international break and Rögle has a Champions League round of 16 game scheduled against Switzerland’s ZSC Lions. Strömgren might get to play in that game, but it’s not a guarantee.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | n/a |

Arsenii Sergeev – G, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 7 | 420 | .954 |
Change from last week | 2 | 120 | +.014 |
As impressive as Dustin Wolf’s start to the season has been – and we’ll get to that in a couple paragraphs – Sergeev’s USHL run has been arguably even more impressive. He allowed one goal across two starts, both wins, and was named the USHL’s Goaltender of the Week.
Adam Werner – G, Stockton Heat, AHL
Colorado’s fifth round pick (131st overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 3 | 179 | .924 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | +.018 |
Werner started once and won his lone start, which is all you can ask of your backup goaltender.
Dustin Wolf – G, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (214th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #4-ranked prospect
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 5 | 301 | .948 |
Change from last week | 2 | 119 | -.003 |
Wolf continues his very strong start to his pro career. He started twice, he won twice, and he’s among the statistical leaders in the AHL in most goaltending categories.
