Since the last time we checked in with the fresh-faced prospects of the Calgary Flames organization, two pretty impressive things happened. First, the Stockton Heat got out the brooms and swept the Bakersfield Condors in the Calder Cup playoffs. (That’s Edmonton’s farm team.)
Second, the Seattle Thunderbirds rallied back from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate the favoured Portland Winterhawks in the WHL playoffs, and Flames prospect Lucas Ciona was a big part of it.

- The playing seasons are over for F Mitchell Mattson (Michigan State), F Josh Nodler (also Michigan State), F Demetrios Koumontzis (Arizona State), D Jake Boltmann (Notre Dame), F Matt Coronato (Harvard), F William Stromgren (Rögle), F Lucas Feuk (Väsby), G Arsenii Sergeev (Tri-City) and F Ilya Nikolaev (Tri-City).
- Connor Mackey, Adam Ruzicka and Adam Werner are with the Flames as extra depth players for the playoffs.
- The Stockton Heat swept the Bakersfield Condors 3-0 in the opening round of the Calder Cup playoffs and will play the Colorado Eagles starting Monday to determine the playoff champion of the Pacific Division.
- We’re expecting some, but likely not all, of the Flames’ prospects that were eliminated from the junior playoffs to join the Heat on amateur try-outs. We should get clarity on that soon.

After trailing the Portland Winterhawks 3-1 in their series, the Thunderbirds clawed back and won the series in seven games. Ciona had two goals in the series, and has six goals and two assists in 11 playoff games. He reportedly had a very good series besides the two goals.

The bad news is that Saint John was eliminated by Rimouski in five games (in overtime) and so the Sea Dogs cannot be the QMJHL champions. But since they’re hosting the Memorial Cup, they have a spot there waiting for them. They’ll await whoever wins the three junior leagues. Francis had a goal and an assist over four games in the first round.
