You don’t have to go too far back to remember the days when the Calgary Flames had a pretty shallow prospect pool.
But over the last few seasons, that’s changed. While the current Flames team boasts several players drafted since 2018, the organization has accumulated quite a few picks and prospects through their trades over the past couple of years. A lot of those picks were used to select players from the Ontario Hockey League… and several of those players are in the midst of very strong seasons.
At present, four Flames prospects are among the top 20 in the OHL in points:
  • Kingston’s Jacob Battaglia, a third-round pick, is 11th with 27 goals and 62 points.
  • Sudbury’s Henry Mews, a second-round pick, is 14th with 12 goals and 60 points.
  • Brampton’s Luke Misa, a fifth-round pick, is 15th with 25 goals and 59 points.
  • Saginaw’s Zayne Parekh, a first-round pick, is 16th with 21 goals and 59 points.
(If you’re keeping track, of the top 16 scorers, one in four is a Flames draft choice.)
Success in junior is no guarantee of success in higher levels of hockey, but you’d much rather have a system full of many high-achieving players from different leagues than not. Right now, the Flames have a lot of depth in their system. We’ll see if that translates into the success that the NHL club desires in the future.
