All four Calgary Flames advance into World Championship semi-finals

On Thursday, the four quarterfinal games at the 2023 IIHF men’s World Championship took place in Riga, Latvia and Tampere, Finland. Via a pair of victories in games that weren’t terribly close, the four Calgary Flames players involved in the tournament have advanced to the semi-final round on Saturday.

The United States beat Czechia 3-0

Flames prospect Matt Coronato won a goal-mouth scramble and bonked a puck in off a Chechia defender to give the Americans a lead. They held on, with Nick Perbix and Cutter Gauthier adding insurance markers.

Coronato scored the game-winning goal, was plus-1, had six shots on net, and played 14:45. He played the right side of a line with Patrick Brown and Sean Ferrell.

The Americans will play Germany (who beat Switzerland) in the semi-finals on Saturday at 9:20 a.m. MT..

Canada beat Finland 4-1

Canada scored midway through the first period and led the rest of the way against the Finns. Canada’s goals were scored by Jack Quinn, Sammy Blais, Michael Carcone and Tyler Toffoli.

MacKenzie Weegar had an assist and was plus-1 in 22:58. Milan Lucic was minus-1 in 12:57. Toffoli had a goal and was plus-1 in 15:28.

Canada will play Latvia (who beat Sweden) in the semi-finals on Saturday at 5:20 a.m. MT.
