On this day in 1983, the Corral hosted its final NHL game

Way, way back in 1983, the city of Calgary was abuzz. The Calgary Flames were on their way to becoming a powerhouse! The new Calgary Coliseum was almost complete! The Olympics were a few years away!

But on this day in 1983 the Flames played their final game in the Stampede Corral, beating the Edmonton Oilers by a 6-5 score in Game 4 of their first round series.

(The Flames lost Games 1, 2 and 3, but won at home to stave off elimination. They lost in Game 5 two nights later in Edmonton to finally have their playoff run ended.)

After losing every single playoff round they ever played at the Omni in Atlanta – losing six first round series and only winning two playoff games in the process – the Flames moved to Calgary in 1980 and made the Corral their temporary home as what eventually became the Olympic Saddledome came into existence. They won three playoff rounds at the Corral, including a trip to the Conference Final in 1981.

Greg Meredith’s third period shorthanded goal in the third period – the eventual game-winner – was the last Flames goal scored in the Corral. Edmonton’s Tom Roulston scored the last NHL goal of any type in the Corral.
