Our unofficial statistics week continues here at FlamesNation as we continued to poke the analytics beehive to look at the 2014-15 edition of the Calgary Flames.
Today we look at special teams.
In a way, this is an extension of yesterday’s look at scoring chances using War On Ice’s figures. By adjusting for differences in ice-time by looking at the Chances Per 60 Minutes rates, we can see who the most and least effective penalty killers and power-play personnel were on the hockey club.
We set a floor of 50 minutes on the ice for the power-play and penalty kill to limit the discussion to regular special teams contributors.

THE POWER PLAY

Most Scoring Chances For Per 60 Minutes:
  • Sean Monahan – 50.81
  • Jiri Hudler – 50.43
  • Mark Giordano – 50.42
  • Dennis Wideman – 48.53
  • Johnny Gaudreau – 48.39
Least Scoring Chances For Per 60 Minutes:
  • Joe Colborne – 38.73
  • T.J. Brodie – 42.41
  • David Jones – 43.81
  • Mikael Backlund – 44.72
  • Mason Raymond – 46.25
A little bit shocking to see Brodie so far down this list, but bear in mind he primarily worked on the second unit with the forwards listed above, who tended not to generate chances to the degree the first unit did. But it’s something to look at next season.
Dougie Hamilton was best Boston blueliner on the power-play in terms of chance generation – 63.37 chances per 60 minutes. Michael Frolik was the second-worst regular Jets forward on the power-play with 44.04 chances per 60 minutes.
