Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman came out with his latest edition of 31 Thoughts on Tuesday afternoon. There was an interesting tidbit related to the potential trade market for Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett.
From Friedman:
15. Before everything that happened last week in Calgary, other clubs were trying to see if they could steal Sam Bennett. The Flames apparently laughed off lowball offers. In the past, teams that have tried to get him include Anaheim, Montreal and Nashville.
18-Year-Old Sam Bennett, who is now 23 years of age, is signed through 2020-21 at a $2.55 million cap hit. The fourth overall selection in 2014, Bennett hasn’t yet become what the scouting community had envisioned when he was a teenager.
Now in his fifth NHL season, Bennett after a 18 goal, 35 point rookie campaign has settled in at around 30-ish points in each of last three seasons. He had 5 points in 20 games prior to his injury and has settled into a middle six role, playing primarily on the third line.
It’s not clear what a “lowball offer” would be for Bennett, but Chandler Stephenson (4 points in 24 games) was swapped from Washington to Vegas for a fifth round pick so that might provide a bit of a ballpark for what Brad Treliving shook his head at.
Bennett was the first player ever drafted by Treliving as an NHL general manager, plus he’s under team control for a few more seasons. It doesn’t make sense to move him unless the Flames get some value back.
