A history of Flames numbers: #39, Alex Chiasson
By Ari Yanover
7 years agoWhen the Flames traded Patrick Sieloff for Alex Chiasson, they were trading away someone unestablished – still with a training camp number of #50 – for a regular NHLer.
Chiasson will make his debut with the Flames as #39. It’ll be the third number he wears in his NHL career. He wore #12 with the Dallas Stars, which probably wasn’t going to work out here; his #90 with the Ottawa Senators has never been worn in Calgary, but apparently, a lower number was desired in this case.
So #39 makes its return to the Flames lineup.
#39 on the Flames
Chiasson will be the ninth player in Flames franchise history to wear #39:
- C Doug Gilmour
- C Brian Skrudland
- D Dan Keczmer
- D Eric Charron
- C Benoit Gratton
- LW Ryan Christie
- RW Carsen Germyn
- LW T.J. Galiardi
- RW Alex Chiasson
Two defencemen aside back in the 90s, the number has gone exclusively to forwards. The number has barely been in use this decade: Galiardi wore it during the 2013-14 season, and that’s been it until Chiasson, who’s only under contract for this one year at this point in time.
The best #39
The first is the best. The Flames are the only team Gilmour wore #39 with, as he ended up being #93 for the rest of his career. Absolutely nobody else comes even remotely close, and why would they?
As for recent performances, Chiasson already has a higher points per game than Galiardi and, if all goes well, he’ll pass his career totals this season; he’s just 23 back.
