On Tuesday’s episode of Barn Burner, Boomer and Pinder discussed whether Yegor Sharangovich will reach the 30-goal plateau with 9 games left in the Calgary Flames season.
Sharangovich has broken out with the Flames this year after being acquired in the Tyler Toffoli trade at the end of last season. The 25-year-old currently has 28 goals in 73 games this year, already surpassing his previous high of 24 goals in 2021-22 with the Devils.
When discussing whether the first year Flame would reach the milestone, Pinder was skeptical due to the rotation of positions that Sharangovich has been in this year.
“Boy I hope so, but I might bet the under,” said Pinder, “You took him off the wing and he stopped scoring as regularly. He wasn’t going to score six goals in a row all year but he did have that run in December. If they can somehow find a way to get a centreman in to play with him I think you got a 30 goal guy for sure.”
When Sharangovich has scored this season, it has come in bunches, specifically two impressive runs. The first came in December when he scored 6 goals over a 5 game goal streak. The most recent came in early March when he potted 8 goals in 8 games. The final goal of that streak – the last goal Sharangovich has scored – came on March 14 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Head coach Ryan Huska has used Sharangovich in a variety of situations this year, moving him up and down the lineup, including even shifting him to the centre position for stretches at a time. While it has been a tough 7 game goalless drought for him, Boomer would point out that the adaptability of the player has been really admirable.
“He’s been a good pro, he’s done whatever they’ve wanted,” said Boomer. “Playing the fourth line, playing the first [line], centre, here’s some new wingers and all that. He’s done everything they have asked and he has done a great job.”
With one more year on his current deal, the fellas also discussed what Sharangovich’s future could look like with the Flames as they continue to try and correct the ship over the next couple of seasons.
“It’s a really interesting discussion,” stated Pinder. “If that’s when you’re going to be good again – and that might be fast track – but if that’s when you’re contending, where is Yegor then? Do you want him then? What kind of a number can you get him on? Or is this a guy where he wants to feel the market and it’ll be like ‘okay, we’ll get you back on the wing, score a ton, and trade you at the deadline.'”
Do you think Sharangovich will reach the 30 goal mark? He starts his final push when the Flames welcome the Anaheim Ducks to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday night.
