The Calgary Flames will have a pair of representatives at the IIHF World Championship later this month. On Friday, Hockey Canada announced the first 22 players on their World Championship roster, and Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane has been included.
The 28-year-old Mangiapane last represented Canada at the 2021 World Championships. He finished off his Flames season – playing in the infamously pointless games against the Vancouver Canucks while the Stanley Cup playoffs had already begun – then flew to the Worlds, went through his COVID quarantine and joined Canada late.
Despite joining late, he sparked the team and they went on a tear after his arrival. Mangiapane posted 11 points over seven games and was a massive catalyst for a Canadian team that won gold that year, ultimately being named the tournament’s most valuable player. With Mangiapane coming off a fairly disappointing 2023-24 season with the Flames, posting just 14 goals and 40 points, you could imagine both he and the Flames are hoping that the 2024 edition of the Worlds can be a jump-start to his game just as the 2021 edition was. (He followed up his 2021 Worlds MVP performance with a 35-goal breakout season in 2021-22.)
Mangiapane is heading into the final year of his current contract with the Flames in 2024-25, and could potentially become an unrestricted free agent next July 1 (2025).
The IIHF World Championships run May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava, Czechia. Martin Pospisil, representing Slovakia, is the other Flames player taking part in the tournament.
