Calgary Flames recall forward Matt Coronato from AHL’s Wranglers, place Jacob Markstrom on injury reserve

In advance of Saturday’s matinee against the New Jersey Devils, the Calgary Flames have made a pair of last-minute roster move. The club has summoned forward Matt Coronato from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers and placed goaltender Jacob Markstrom on the injury reserve list.

Prior to Friday’s practice, forwards Walker Duehr and A.J. Greer were announced by the club as absent due to illness. It appears that they’re still under the weather, hence Coronato’s recall. Coronato was a healthy scratch for the Wranglers on Friday night, presumably to keep him fresh for a potential call-up. (If you want to get technical, this is likely an emergency conditions recall based on the Flames potentially not having 12 healthy forwards for Saturday’s game. Dustin Wolf is already up on an emergency recall, with Markstrom’s injury creating emergency conditions for goaltenders.)

Markstrom heads to the IR to make room for Coronato under the 23-player roster limit. This means he’ll be unavailable for seven days, retroactive to Monday’s injury, so all this really does is suggest strongly that Markstrom won’t be playing against Colorado on Monday. (Monday would be his seventh day on the IR, so he’d be eligible to return for Tuesday potentially.)

Coronato was sent to the Wranglers back on Nov. 3. Since heading to the AHL, he’s been a pretty consistent offensive weapon for the club. He’s scored eight goals and 18 points over 15 games, registering points in each of his past six games. In 10 NHL games this season, Coronato had a goal and two points.

The Flames host the Devils at the Saddledome, with puck drop just after 2 p.m. MT.
