The Calgary Flames did a bit of business on their off-day on Wednesday. The club announced that they’ve signed forward Martin Pospisil to a two-year contract extension with a $1 million AAV.
The deal runs through 2024-25 and 2025-26, and each year is one-way with $1 million salary.
Pospisil is currently on a one-year, two-way deal worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $90,000 at the AHL level. He was called up to the Flames from the Wranglers back on Nov. 3 and has basically made it impossible for them to send him back down – well, the combination of his play and his waiver status. He has 11 points in 34 NHL games – playing primarily on the second line with Nazem Kadri and Connor Zary – and six points in six AHL games.
Originally a fourth-round selection of the club back in 2018, Pospisil was lauded for his physical tools (and willingness to use them to his team’s benefit) but was held back by some consistency concerns and injury woes. Simply put: he had the worst injury luck a young player could have, and his concussion history nearly led to him leaving hockey. But he’s persevered and built himself up into a really effective NHL player early in his career.
A two-year, one-way deal gives Pospisil something he hasn’t had yet as a pro: a bit of job security. The low, low cap hit – $1 million – minimizes the risk to the Flames. If Pospisil doesn’t maintain an NHL standard of play, the cap hit is low enough that the Flames can bury the contract in the AHL without any penalty. It’s a win-win deal seemingly for both sides.
Pospisil will be a restricted free agent upon expiry of his deal in 2026.
