For the second consecutive year, the Calgary Wranglers will be sending their head coach to the American Hockey League’s All-Star festivities. The Wranglers’ Friday night win over the Abbotsford Canucks ensured that they will finish the 2023 calendar year atop the Pacific Division. As such, bench boss Trent Cull is headed to the AHL All-Star Classic in San Jose in early February.
Cull’s in his first season behind the bench of the Wranglers, and his sixth as an AHL head coach – he spent four seasons with the Utica Comets and one with Abbotsford before a stint as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. This will be his first trip to the AHL’s All-Star weekend. The Wranglers are in first place in the Pacific Division with a 19-7-3 record and 45 points; they’re third overall in the AHL.
Last season, Mitch Love served as Wranglers head coach and represented the club at the AHL All-Star festivities, joined by Matthew Phillips and Dustin Wolf. Love was named the AHL’s top coach and he and Phillips now find themselves with the Washington Capitals. Wolf was named the AHL’s top goaltender and most valuable player and remains as the Wranglers’ top netminder.
The AHL’s 2024 All-Star Classic goes Feb. 4-5 in San Jose, CA, hosted by the Barracuda, the Sharks’ farm club.
