The Calgary Flames will be trying to snap out of another goal-scoring funk that has contributed to losses in each of their past two outings when they play host to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday as -145 favourites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Calgary blew an early first-period lead on its way to a 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, dumping the team’s record to 7-2-0 in nine games under recently hired interim head coach Geoff Ward going into Thursday night’s matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome.

After struggling through a slump that saw them fall to defeat in seven of eight outings, the Flames rebounded well after Ward took over the bench, posting seven straight wins while averaging four goals per game during that stretch.
However, the team’s early-season scoring woes have re-emerged over the past two contests, potting just one total goal in their two recent losses to the Penguins as well as suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Not surprisingly, the Flames’ power outage has snapped a 4-0-1 run for the OVER in totals betting. The UNDER has paid out in each of the team’s two recent defeats, and has gone 8-7-1 when the Flames play at home so far this season.
The Canadiens arrive in Calgary pegged as +125 underdogs at sports betting sites after opening a season-long seven-game road trip in Vancouver on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory to pay out on -105 odds.
Montreal has turned in steady results since enduring an eight-game losing streak to close out the month of November, posting wins in five of seven contests to maintain a tenuous grasp on third place in the Atlantic Division standings. The Canadiens have powered their recent steady performance with stout defense, surrendering just 12 total goals over their past seven contests.
The Canadiens have been particularly stingy on the road, surrendering just three total goals in three straight wins, and now sport an 8-4-3 record in 15 contests away from Bell Centre. The team’s recent strong play has done little to buoy their position on the Stanley Cup odds, where they now lag at a distant +5000. However, the Canadiens have enjoyed success in recent dates with Calgary, posting three straight wins, all by a 3-2 margin.
