Catching up with Brett Pollock

8 years agoBrett Pollock has played hockey for the majority of his life. He turns 20 on St. Patrick’s Day. For the first time in his life, his hockey-playing will see him based out of somewhere other than the Edmonton area.
Prior to the National Hockey League trade deadline, Pollock was likely to begin his first professional training camp in Dallas, Texas. But following the events of Feb. 29, he’ll instead be headed for training camp in a rather unexpected place: Calgary. He was traded along with Jyrki Jokipakka and a conditional second round pick in 2016 in exchange for Kris Russell.
Following the Edmonton Oil Kings’ 4-2 loss to the Calgary Hitmen, his first trip to his future hockey home since the trade, Pollock caught up with a few members of the local media.
On the trade experience itself, which occurred during the Oil Kings’ 6-1 loss to Victoria (which began at 11:30 a.m. MT):
It was a different experience. I mean, I’ve never been traded before. We were playing a morning game so, obviously not having access to Twitter or anything like that or my agent was different. But I came off the ice after the game and my coach pulled me aside and said listen, you were involved in a trade and he gave me the details. So that was my way of finding out.
[And yes, the story about Gene Principe taking photos of Pollock as he was coming out for after an intermission was true. Pollock noticed.]
On how much he’s looked into the Flames’ depth chart and his placement within it:
Not a whole lot. Like I said, it’s pretty fresh and my focus is right now on the Western League. But I’ve taken a peek and looking at who they’ve got and what’s going on, but I’m sure this summer I’ll figure it out more and be more open to see what’s going on.
On if he has a preferred position to play; he worked the right side of the power-play and scored a goal against the Hitmen, but is listed as a left-winger:
I don’t really have a preferred position. I played right wing for half the year this year and now I’m back on left wing. So I’ve been put all over and on the point on the power-play and stuff, so I’m happy anywhere.
His response when it was mentioned that the Flames don’t have a ton of depth on the right wing:
I guess I’m happy I played the right side for half a year then. [chuckles]
