We’re into the guts of the CBA, folks. But the next few sections are a bit lean on controversial information, so let’s double up.
The first double-header is Article 19: Per Diem Allowance, Expense Reimbursement and Article 20: Game Tickets.

Per diem allowance

The per diem allowance for days on the road was defined in Section 19(a). In 2012-13, it was set at $100 and indexed to inflation. By 2019-20, it would be around $111.
Now, players don’t get the full per diem necessarily. If they’re on a trip where game meals are provided by the club – which is most of the trips – their per diem allowance is cut in half.
Also, their per diem allowance varies depending on circumstances:
  • If a team leaves home for a road game before noon local, the player gets the full amount. If they leave after noon, they only get half. If they leave home for a road game after 7:30 p.m. local, they don’t get anything.
  • If a team leaves a road city for home before noon local, the player gets half of the amount. If they leave after noon, they get the full amount.

Game tickets

Are you on the Flames e-mail list and occasionally get those notes telling you that player hold tickets have been released? Wondering what the heck that means? Article 20 has you covered, pals.
For the road team, the home club has to make a maximum of 80 tickets available for purchase (two per player). The tickets are held until 1 p.m. local for evening games (10 a.m. for afternoon games), then made available to the public.
For the home team, two free tickets and two tickets for purchase have to be made available for each home player. If a player wants to get tickets, they have to do so at the beginning of the season.
Finally, 16 tickets must be made available for purchase by the NHLPA for every home and playoff game. (The number of tickets escalates during the playoffs, reaching 24 for the Stanley Cup Final.) They have to be requested 48 hours before each game and if they’re not used, they’re released to the public.
Long story short? The tickets you’re buying the afternoon of a game after getting an e-mail from the Flames are road team tickets that weren’t used.
