Comparing Calgary’s 2015 and 2006 Home Win Streaks

8 years agoTonight, the Calgary Flames have a chance to set a franchise record with their 11th consecutive home victory. The last time the Flames won 10 straight at home was 2006. With an eye at figuring out just how the Flames are playing so well at home, let’s take a look at the numbers and compare some key figures at home and on the road from this year’s streak and the 2006 edition.
For the record: statistics are from War On Ice. The 2015 time-frame is home and away games between November 5 and December 22, while 2006 games are from between November 7 and December 12 of that year.
THE TWO STREAKS
2015:
- Beat Philadelphia 2-1 (in overtime) on November 5
- Beat Pittsburgh 5-2 on November 7

Fundamentally, the Flames are playing a lot better during this home streak than they were in 2006. They’re scoring more goals per game and their shooting percentage is a tad better. That said, the same things that we’ve noticed team-wide – some iffy defensive play – has emerged in their home numbers. I mean, look at the goals-against gap. That said, we’re comparing an insanely strong Kiprusoff-driven 98.3% save percentage against a perfectly competent Karri Ramo percentage. But allowing five times as many goals in the same span is pretty scary-sounding, regardless.
Away from home, the Flames are…not great. The Flames haven’t had the puck much away from home, and when they have had it they’ve struggled to score consistently. Their defensive woes are fairly consistent across the board, to be honest.

Calgary has scored 3 power-play goals in 10 home games and 4 in 11 road games during this span. Worth noting: the 2015 goals-against tally doesn’t include Brad Marchand’s short-handed goal during the late stages of the Boston game. The puck movement and chances with the extra man are better this season than in 2006, but they’re scoring fewer goals.

The penalty kill is consistently pretty bad across the board, but the good news seem to be that they’re about as likely to get scored on at home than away. That’s a departure from 2006, where they were scored upon much more frequently on the road than at the Saddledome. That said, they haven’t been much of a threat to generate chances or had a ton of luck suppressing chances this season either at home or away.
SUM IT UP
The Flames have a chance to set a new home winning streak record tonight against Edmonton. Comparing the 2015 statistics to the 2006 streak’s reveals that this season’s edition of the Flames are much more dependent on home ice for wins than the 2006 club.
