Consolation Prize: Gaudreau Named To All-Rookie Team

He didn’t win the Calder Memorial Trophy, but Calgary Flames rookie sensation Johnny Gaudreau was honoured by the National Hockey League at the annual year-end awards.
Gaudreau was one of six freshmen named to the league’s All-Rookie Team.
One of two runners-up for the NHL’s award for top rookie, Gaudreau joined St. Louis goalie Jake Allen, defenders Aaron Ekblad (of Florida) and John Klingberg (of Dallas), and forwards Mark Stone (of Ottawa) and Filip Forsberg (of Nashville) as the league’s honourees. [Aside: I’d love to see the balloting break-down, because where art thou, Michael Hutchinson?]
Gaudreau is the latest in a fairly length list of Flames named to the All-Rookie Team:
  • 2005-06: Dion Phaneuf
  • 1997-98: Derek Morris
  • 1996-97: Jarome Iginla
  • 1989-90: Sergei Makarov
  • 1987-88: Joe Nieuwendyk
  • 1985-86: Gary Suter
  • 1983-84: Hakan Loob and Jamie Macoun
Most of them turned out to have pretty decent careers, I’d say.
