Cuts, Injuries and Chances

The Flames made some roster moves today, and we have scoring chance and zone entry data for last night’s game in Winnipeg.
Long story short: we’re almost at the final 23-man roster based on injuries and roster assignments.

FLAMES SEND TRIO TO AHL

The Flames assigned Joni Ortio, Sven Baertschi and Josh Jooris were assigned to the Adirondack Flames this morning.
Ortio is a victim of the numbers game, but he’ll be given the chance to be the undisputed #1 goalie in Adirondack and challenge for a spot in Calgary next season. And he got extra time up with the big club, working with Jordan Sigalet (last year’s Abbotsford coach and this year’s Flames goalie coach), which is probably better than being in the AHL earlier for camp.
Baertschi and Gaudreau were likely competing for the same spot on the left side. Gaudreau out-played Baertschi, so he gets the spot and Baertschi gets to be a top-line player in the AHL.
Jooris is tremendously disappointing, in the sense that I felt he out-played Devin Setoguchi. But if the logic is Setoguchi is the 13th or 14th forward and they don’t want to park Jooris in the press box a lot, that’s the only way this move makes much sense.

FLAMES INJURIES

Tyler Wotherspoon, Corey Potter, Marcus Granlund and Sam Bennett are presently nursing ailments. Wotherspoon and Potter are recovering from off-season shoulder surgeries, Granlund had a concussion and Bennett has an upper-body injury. I expect to see all four dispatched to the AHL (or OHL) when fully cleared.
The Flames will officially announce the 2014-15 roster on Tuesday afternoon.

FLAMES/JETS SCORING CHANCES

Holy moley, that’s a lot of good chances from the right side of Jonas Hiller. Big question: was that intentional by the Winnipeg Jets, potentially targeting a side of Hiller’s game, or rather an inherent weakness on the right side of Calgary’s defense?

FLAMES/JETS ZONE ENTRIES

Here’s the gist:
  • Entries coded A are Controlled Entries, such as carries or passes across the blueline.
  • Entries coded B are Uncontrolled Entries, such as dump-ins or errant passes.
  • Entries coded C are Other Entries, usually things such as icings or penalties taken by the other team that result in the Flames entering the offensive zone without doing anything directly.
Most controlled entries last night: Mason Raymond (5), Joe Colborne (4) and Mikael Backlund (4). Backlund and Raymond each had 3 entries at even-strength. Brandon Bollig had 7 dump-ins during the game, leading the entire team by a decent margin.
