Today’s the first official day of 2015-16 Calgary Flames training camp over at Winsport.
The day kicks off with a short practice for Group A (Team McDonald) at 9am, followed by Group A (McDonald) taking on Group B (Nieuwendyk) in a short scrimmage at 10. That’s followed by a practice for Group B at 11 and a practice for Group C (McCrimmon) at noon. The McCrimmon practice is on Arena C, while everything else is at the Joan Snyder rink (Arena B) at Winsport. For convenience, they’re right beside each other.
Who’s on the two scrimmage teams, you may ask?

TEAM McDONALD (A)

Goalies: Jonas Hiller and Kent Simpson
Defense: T.J. Brodie, Tyler Wotherspoon, Deryk Engelland, Dustin Stevenson, Aaron Johnson and Keegan Kanzig
Forwards: Johnny Gaudreau, Josh Jooris, Sean Monahan, Tyson Baillie, Kenny Agostino, Ryan Lomberg, Markus Granlund, Hunter Smith, Micheal Ferland, Taylor Burke, Mason Marchment and Pavel Karnaukhov
Hypothetical best starting line-up: Hiller, Brodie – Engelland, Gaudreau – Monahan – Jooris
Helpful hints: Simpson is the AHL back-up, Stevenson was beloved in Adirondack and is probably gonna be their captain, Jooris wears #16 now after the summer number shuffle.

TEAM NIEUWENDYK (B)

Goalies: Karri Ramo and Mason McDonald
Defense: Douglas Murray, Kris Russell, Dennis Wideman, Patrick Sieloff, Kenney Morrison and Oliver Kylington
Forwards: Joe Colborne, Mikael Backlund, Lance Bouma, Drew Shore, Emile Poirier, Brandon Bollig, Garnet Hathaway, Turner Elson, Michael Frolik, Mitchell Heard, Louick Marcotte and Andrew Mangiapane
Hypothetical best starting line-up: Ramo, Russell – Wideman, Bouma – Backlund – Frolik
Helpful hints: Who’s the little guy in this group? Prospect camp stand-out Andrew Mangiapane (wearing #88). Poirier’s wearing #28 now. Frolik wears #67. Heard and Marcotte are on AHL deals.

ONGOING DAILY NOTES

Unfortunately, none of the FlamesNation crew is in attendance today at Winsport, but we’ll check in to provide updates from our media brethren who are at the rink.
