Day 2 Scrimmage and Camp Open Thread

It’s the second day of main camp!
For those of you wanting to head down, Group B (Nieuwendyk) scrimmages with Group C (McCrimmon) at 10am! Get down early, because space is limited.
Group B also practices at 9am, while Group C practices after the scrimmage at 11am. Group A practices at noon, after the two scrimmage groups.
Here’s who’s scrimmaging today:

YESTERDAY

(Yesterday’s camp thread)
Team McDonald beat Team Nieuwendyk 2-0 in the scrimmage. T.J. Brodie and Kenny Agostino scored for Team McDonald.
The “main” defensive pairings among the veterans were Brodie/Engelland, Wideman/Russell and Giordano/Hamilton. In an interesting wrinkle, Douglas Murray paired up with Oliver Kylington. Almost all of these will change in short order, though.

TEAM NIEUWENDYK (B)

Goalies: Karri Ramo and Mason McDonald
Defense: Douglas Murray, Kris Russell, Dennis Wideman, Patrick Sieloff, Kenney Morrison and Oliver Kylington
Forwards:
Joe Colborne, Mikael Backlund, Lance Bouma, Drew Shore, Emile Poirier,
Brandon Bollig, Garnet Hathaway, Turner Elson, Michael Frolik, Mitchell
Heard, Louick Marcotte and Andrew Mangiapane
Notes: Hathaway was absent yesterday with an illness, so he might not suit up for the scrimmage. If not, I wouldn’t be shocked if another body was moved over from Group A.

TEAM McCRIMMON (C)

Goalies: Jon Ortio and Nick Schneider
Defense: Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, Jakub Nakladal, Ryan Wilson, Rasmus Andersson, Brett Kulak and Riley Bruce
Forwards: Matt Stajan, David Jones, Mason Raymond, Jiri Hudler, Morgan Klimchuk, Bill Arnold, Bryce van Brabant, Derek Grant, Austin Carroll, Blair Riley and Sam Bennett
Notes: Group C only has 11 forwards, so perhaps they borrow a body from Group A. Jon Gillies is part of this group if/when he’s cleared for action. Lots of veterans here, and I’m curious how the pairings fit beyond Giordano and Hamilton. I’m interested in seeing how the forwards shake out (do Hudler and Bennett play together?) as well.

ONGOING DAILY NOTES

Team McDonald (A) practices at noon, and that’s the group that includes Johnny Gaudreau, Micheal Ferland, Josh Jooris, Sean Monahan, T.J. Brodie, Deryk Engelland and Jonas Hiller, in case you’re curious. Hiller was off-ice yesterday due to illness, and depending on his status you may see goalies shuffled around from group-to-group today.
FlamesNation has their roving reporters at Winsport this weekend, so we’ll update this space throughout the day with updates.
We had a tie in the scrimmage. Brandon Bollig scored for Nieuwendyk, while Rasmus Andersson scored late (with a really nice wrister from the high slot) to tie it for McCrimmon. No overtime or anything afterwards.
Guys that stood out to me in the scrimmage: Kenney Morrison (good positional play), Andersson, Brett Kulak (both guys picked good times to pinch), Dougie Hamilton (a gorgeous pass to spring Hudler for a breakaway), Morgan Klimchuk (played surprisingly physical) and Bill Arnold (created and maintained some strong zone time for his side).
Groupings included:
  • Group B: Bouma-Backlund-Frolik, Poirier-Shore-Bollig, Hathaway-Elson-Mangiapane, Marcotte-Heard-Colborne; Russell-Wideman, Murray-Kylington, Sieloff-Morrison; Ramo/Schneider
  • Group C: Klimchuk-Stajan-Jones, Hudler-Bennett-Van Brabant, Riley-Arnold-Carroll, Grant/Bruce; Giordano-Hamilton, Nakladal-Kulak, Wilson-Andersson; Ortio
  • Group C was missing Raymond and already was a forward short, so they rotated guys and used Bruce as a winger here and there, but these are the general groupings.
  • Group A lines from practice: Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland, Agostino-Granlund-Jooris, Marchment-Karnaukhov-Smith, Lomberg-Baillie-Burke; Brodie-Engelland, Johnson-Kanzig, Stevenson-Wotherspoon; Hiller/Simpson
Don’t read too much into groupings and lines until the pre-season games start, though.
Winning the “mountain climbers” at the end of Group A’s practice: Josh Jooris, Taylor Burke and Keegan Kanzig.
