Don Cherry thinks Mark Giordano is a Norris contender
By Ryan Pike
5 years agoA few hours after the Calgary Flames’ 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday afternoon, Hockey Night in Canada’s Don Cherry trumpeted Mark Giordano as a Norris Trophy contender on Coach’s Corner.

The relevant snippet, for those of you who don’t want to check out the video:
Giordano, I don’t understand why this guy is not mentioned… He does everything. He scores goals. He hits. He fights. He blocks shots. He got out of the way there so Smith could see it. He does everything. He’s never, ever mentioned. I don’t understand it. He is a tough guy and they’re lucky to have him.
Giordano, 35, has been among the NHL’s defensive scoring leaders all season. He has yet to win a Norris Trophy in his career, but we’ll take umbrage with the notion that he’s “never, ever mentioned.”
Over the past five seasons, Giordano has finished 10th, 6th, 13th, 8th and 16th – and that’s in a league with 180 regular spots for blueliners. It’s patently false to say he’s never mentioned when he’s been in the top 10% (as rated by Norris voters) since he turned 30.
We also put “Mark Giordano Norris” into Google News and found a handful of pieces examining Giordano’s stellar play in the context of his award candidacy:
- Eric Francis from Sportsnet
- Kristen Anderson from Postmedia
- Tracey Myers from NHL.com
- Jared Clinton from The Hockey News
Giordano is having a superb season. He’s been mentioned a lot recently as a Norris contender, and deservedly so.
