FGD R1-G2: Flames and Avalanche work late on Saturday night (8:30pm MT, CBC/SN West)

After a Game 1 triumph, the Flames try to cement their home ice advantage in Game 2.

Mike Smith starts for the Flames, backed up by David Rittich. Their scratches are Jon Gillies, Oliver Kylington, Juuso Valimaki, Dalton Prout, Michael Stone, Dillon Dube, Alan Quine and Austin Czarnik.

The Flames played two different games in Game 1: a fairly tentative first half, and then a much more assured second half. They’ll probably try to replicate Game 1’s performance as much as they can; trying to limit the chances that Colorado’s top guns get while waiting for them to make mistakes for them to pounce on.

If they can do that and stay out of the penalty box, they’ll be in good shape. Per Hockey Reference, teams that get out to a 2-0 edge end up winning 87.3% of their series.

Projected lines, via Daily Faceoff:

Philipp Grubauer goes for the Avalanche, backed up by Semyon Varlamov. Their projected scratches are Sven Andrighetto, Ryan Graves and Mark Barberio. There will be no lineup changes from how things began to kick off Game 1.

Expect to see some line tinkering by Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar in-game as he tries to find the right mix of players to get some oomph in Game 2. The lines above are what we expect to see them begin the evening with, but they’re definitely not going to be set in stone.

Tonight’s referees are Kevin Pollock and Francois St. Laurent, who previously worked Game 1 of the Pittsburgh/NY Islanders series. According to Scouting the Refs, Pollock was 34th in the NHL for frequency of calling penalties while St. Laurent was 18th.

The linesmen are Mark Shewchyk and Matt McPherson and the standby official is Justin St. Pierre – this trio has been retained in the same roles as in Game 1. The series supervisor is Bill McCreary.

The Flames are healthy.

The Avalanche are without Vladislav Kamenev.
