If there’s one player the Calgary Flames know well of the potential first round picks, it’s Edmonton Oil Kings defenseman Matthew Robertson. The Flames own a Western Hockey League team and Robertson played on their top rival. Might he be their 26th overall selection?

Scouting report

I’ve seen Robertson in-arena roughly five teams this season and he’s one of my favourite players to watch in the entire WHL. He’s got size, listed as 6’4″ and 200 pounds. He’s a left shot defender, something the Flames have but always need more of. More impressively, Robertson is just an amazingly poised hockey player – never rattled and rarely caught out of position.
Steve Kournianos of The Draft Analyst detailed what makes Robertson tick on the ice early in the season:
Strong and mobile two-way blue liner with a team-first attitude who handles both big minutes and big situations with maturity and confidence. Robertson is a throwback to the Western Canadian defensemen of old who were able to intimidate with physicality or their play with the puck. He’s clearly the top defender for the Oil Kings by the way he’s used at even strength and special teams, and how often Robertson is being summoned to address his coach’s concerns. His size, long reach and timing makes him close to impossible to beat one on one, and few teenage defensemen can force opponents into so many unsuccessful zone entries simply by standing up at the blue line. He’ll respect oncoming speed by giving himself more room, but Robertson’s long stick and strong upper body keep the majority of puck carriers to the outside. Robertson has soft hands and sharp hand-eye coordination that allows him to corral pass attempts cleanly and quickly transition from defense to offense. He’s not entirely married to the slot, but he keeps his head up and always looks for gaps to cover.
Our colleagues over at Canucks Army profiled Robertson earlier this week:
Matthew Robertson played a key role in the Edmonton Oil Kings’ breakout season. He was likely their best two-way defender, posting 33 points in 52 games while also providing a steady presence defensively. He doesn’t have top-pairing upside, but Robertson is big, strong, good-skating defenceman who can much minutes in a variety of situations.
Robertson missed a bit of time in the first half of the season due to a concussion, but he cam back and finished the season strong. He’s not a super flashy, exciting player, but he’s incredibly reliable, balanced and poised. There’s no panic in his game, which allowed the Oil Kings to use him in every situation and allowed him to really help them manage the pace of games.

The numbers

In his second full season in the Dub, Robertson had seven goals and 33 points in 52 games (along with eight points in 16 playoff games). He was 29th among all WHL defensemen in points. Focusing on his age group, he was fifth in points, primary points and nine in goals. He’s offensively sound and not overly dependent on special teams time for production, but he’s a notch below the likes of Bowen Byram offensively.
Internationally, Robertson had four points in five games at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Availability and fit

The scouting consensus on Robertson is that he’s a late first round (or early second round) talent: ISS has him 16th, Dobber Prospects has him 30th, the Draft Analyst/Sporting News has him 33rd, my rankings at The Hockey Writers have him 20th, Sportsnet has him outside the first round, The Athletic has him 35th and 41st, and The Hockey News has him 31st.
Does Robertson have incredible upside? Offensively, no. But he’s good enough defensive and mobility-wise that he helps elevate his teammates with his size, smarts and poise. He’s not a dominating player, but is someone who doesn’t get rattled and is effective at managing a game. You could label him as a “safe” pick where the Flames are selecting, particularly since the Flames heavily scouted the WHL this season and likely have a comfortable level of knowledge about his game.
