Flames bringing in Jamie Devane on PTO

Halfway through August, the Flames are getting work done. Yesterday, they finally re-signed Tyler Wotherspoon; today, they’re… bringing in Jamie Devane.

While we wait for Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan (and Freddie Hamilton, for that matter) deals to get done, the Flames do still have other areas to see to. They aren’t all as crucial, but the little areas of adding to a team build up. 

This is probably not one of those moves, but it’s something. Devane is a 25-year-old, 6’5, 220 lb. left winger who scored 11 points in 62 AHL games last season.

As James Mirtle noted in the source tweet, Devane was a part of the Brian Burke era in Toronto: the Leafs drafted him in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, 68th overall. He had 17 points in 64 games for the Plymouth Whalers in his draft year, which makes for an odd selection that high, to say the least.

Devane spent the entire 2015-16 season playing in the AHL for the Milwaukee Admirals, where he notably did not contribute much offensively at all, despite playing the majority of the season. He did have 82 penalty minutes, though; combine that with his size and the ask of him is obvious.

This isn’t quite like bringing in Mike Angelidis. There are some similarities there, but Angelidis has a much stronger resume to fall back on.

Devane did ultimately get in two NHL games, both with the Maple Leafs in 2013-14. This probably isn’t an NHL thing, though. The Flames may have questions as to who’s going to fill out the wings, but Devane isn’t the answer. This isn’t even a guaranteed contract: this is giving a former draft pick a chance somewhere else.

Bodies will always get brought in during the buildup to training camp and, ultimately, the regular season. PTOs don’t tend to make it, though. The last PTO to make the Flames was Raphael Diaz back in 2014, and Devane ticks pretty much none of the boxes he did.
