Flames legend and 2020 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Jarome Iginla turns 44

Jarome Iginla, the third player to have his number retired by the Calgary Flames, turns 44 today.

Iginla spent parts of 17 seasons with the Flames after debuting with the team during the 1995-96 playoffs. While wearing his iconic No. 12 in Calgary, he racked up 525 goals and 1,095 points in 1,219 regular-season games (all franchise records).

A two-time 50-goal scorer, Iginla captured two “Rocket” Richard Trophies during his career and was thrice named to the NHL’s end-of-season first all-star team. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading point-scorer in 2001–02, scoring a career-high 52 goals with Calgary that season while also winning his first of two Olympic gold medals.

Iginla was a finalist for the Calder and Hart awards during his career and, in 2002, won the player-voted Lester B. Pearson Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player.

He shone brightest with Calgary during the 2003–04 season, in which he scored a league-best 41 goals before adding 13 more in the playoffs en route to the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 2010, while playing at his third Olympics, Iginla memorably assisted on Sidney Crosby’s “Golden Goal” in overtime against the United States.

The Flames traded Iginla to Pittsburgh during the 2012–13 season. He finished his career with stints in Boston, Colorado, and Los Angeles before retiring in 2018.

Iginla retired with exactly 1,300 points in 1,554 NHL games. He currently ranks in a tie with 2002 Olympic linemate Joe Sakic for 16th all-time with 625 career goals.

The Flames retired Iginla’s No. 12 prior to a game against the Minnesota Wild in 2019. The following year, Iginla was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He’ll be officially inducted in a ceremony in Toronto this November.
