Flames make some post-deadline roster moves

6 years agoAfter all the National Hockey League trade deadline moving and shaking, the Calgary Flames have made a few roster tweaks to set things up for the home stretch.
Forward Andrew Mangiapane has been returned to the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League. Newly signed blueliner Cody Goloubef has also been reassigned to Stockton. Finally, goalies David Rittich and Jon Gillies were both separately assigned to Stockton in paper transactions to keep them eligible for the AHL’s playoffs, then recalled back to Calgary.
What does this all mean? Here’s the gist of it, friends:
Who’s on the Flames roster?
- Goaltenders Jon Gillies and David Rittich
- Defensemen Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Travis Hamonic, Michael Stone, Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Brett Kulak
- Forwards Chris Stewart, Mikael Backlund, Johnny Gaudreau, Tanner Glass, Matt Stajan, Matthew Tkachuk, Curtis Lazar, Garnet Hathaway, Sean Monahan, Nick Shore, Troy Brouwer, Michael Frolik, Mark Jankowski, Micheal Ferland and Sam Bennett
That’s 24 active players, which is allowed since we’re past the trade deadline and the roster limit is lifted (as long as teams stay below the salary cap).
Mike Smith (lower-body, day-to-day), Marek Hrivik (upper-body, day-to-day) and Kris Versteeg (hip, week-to-week) are on the injured reserve. Gillies is up on emergency recall and he must return to the AHL as soon as Smith is healthy. Rittich is up on a “regular” recall and has used one of Calgary’s four remaining recalls – it’s a dumb, pointless, confusing post-deadline rule that exists to stop NHL clubs from keeping oodles of healthy bodies around.
Who’s on Stockton’s roster?
- Goaltenders C.J. Motte, Ryan Faragher, Tyler Parsons (injured) and Mason McDonald (injured)
- Defensemen Josh Healey, Oliver Kylington, Tyler Wotherspoon, Rasmus Andersson, Oleg Yevenko, Colby Robak, Cody Goloubef, Dalton Prout and Adam Ollas Mattsson (injured)
- Forwards Mike McMurtry, Rod Pelley, Spencer Foo, Hunter Shinkaruk, Morgan Klimchuk, Austin Carroll, Emile Poirier, Brett Pollock, Andrew Mangiapane, Brett Findlay, Colin Smith, Darren Nowick, Ryan Lomberg and Luke Gazdic
Everybody who is currently on Stockton’s roster is eligible to play in the playoffs, plus Rittich and Gillies. The Heat are also able to bring up ECHLers as needed, so guys like Hunter Smith and Kayle Doetzel (currently with Kansas City) are eligible, if needed.
Any Flames junior prospect can come to Stockton on an amateur try-out (ATO) contract when their team’s season is finished – this means Juuso Valimaki (Tri-City, WHL), Glenn Gawdin (Swift Current, WHL), Matthew Phillips (Victoria, WHL), Nick Schneider (Calgary, WHL), Zach Fischer (Spokane, WHL), Dillon Dube (Kelowna, WHL), Adam Ruzicka (Sarnia, OHL) and D’Artagnan Joly (Baie-Comeau, QMJHL) are eligible for the playoffs.
If a college player (such as Adam Fox or a free agent) wanted to join Stockton for the playoffs, they would have to sign a contract and void their remaining college eligibility.
