With the completion of the All-Star Break, the Calgary Flames have some roster news.
The club has recalled forwards Andrew Mangiapane and Ryan Lomberg from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat. In addition, Jaromir Jagr has cleared the waiver wire, with the expectation that he will be re-assigned to Rytiri Kladno of the Czech 1. Liga (the secondary Czech league).
Mangiapane, 21, and Lomberg, 23, return to Calgary after being sent down to keep them active during the NHL’s All-Star Break (and to save some cap space).
Despite missing five games due to his multiple recalls to the Flames, Mangiapane remains the leading scorer for Stockton (with 35 points in 31 games) but also one of the top offensive players in the entire AHL. He was named to the AHL’s All-Star Game for his efforts, but his repeated NHL recalls meant that he was replaced in the game (which goes tonight). He has zero points in eight NHL games, playing almost exclusively on the fourth line.
Lomberg has 14 points in 37 AHL games and made his NHL debut prior to the All-Star Break playing on the fourth line.
Because Jagr, 45, is still under contract with the Flames he’s eligible to return for the playoffs. It’s extremely rare that a player farmed out to Europe ever returns to the NHL in the same season, but you never know. While it’s not immediately clear that it’s the case, it seems likely that the Flames will be paying the remainder of Jagr’s guaranteed NHL salary while he’s playing in the Czech Republic.
Once the Jagr move becomes official, the Flames have 22 players on their active roster (two goalies, seven defensemen and 13 forwards), two players on the injured reserve (Kris Versteeg and Michael Frolik) and one player on the season-opening injured reserve (Daniel Pribyl). The Flames wouldn’t need to make a roster move to activate Frolik from the IR.
UPDATE: The Flames have officially assigned Jagr to Kladno.
