The Calgary Flames made a depth move this morning that involved a minor bit of history. 2013 first round selection Morgan Klimchuk has been recalled from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat. He’s taking the roster spot of Marek Hrivik, who’s been placed on the injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.
Klimchuk, 22, has the dubious distinction of being the only player selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft to not play a single game in the big leagues (or even get called up). He’s progressed rather nicely since going pro in the 2015-16 season; after a quiet freshman season in the AHL playing in the bottom six for the Heat, he’s become a reliable two-way presence and a pretty consistent scorer for the Heat. In 44 games this season, he has 27 points.
Hrivik joins Daniel Pribyl (season-opening IR), Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg on the injured reserve.
